Transfer chance me please!

Jewish/Hispanic male Sophomore from the University of Central Florida, first generation college student with 36 credits and a 3.67 gpa (rising trend). I am taking 12 credits in the fall and 15 in the spring. My high school statistics weren’t great I started my Junior year with a 2.76 and graduated with a 3.4, shows my ability to bounce back from adversity, but by the end of my spring semester I will of completed 66 credits, which I would imagine would make my high school record irrelevant. I don’t have classes like calc or chem because my major doesn’t require it and would be irrelevant to my course study. In my essay I talked about how I wanted to transfer so that I could have more research opportunities, take advantage of the great internship opportunities that my university doesn’t have, as well as BU’s study abroad program.

Great Recommendation letters and essays (probably the strongest part of my application besides my ecs)

Fall courses:
Composition 2
Criminal Law
Criminal Procedure
American History 2

Spring:
Political phycology
Scope and Methods of political Science
Comparative Politics
International Politics

Extracurriculars (high school):

Varsity Swim team captain
2 year varsity lettermen
Most outstanding new swimmer award
Founder of Tiger Care International (helped raise money for children in Uganda)
Best Buddies peer mentor
Red Cross Volunteer
Community pool Lifeguard
Part of school debate team

Extracurriculars (college):

Committee chair of Philanthropy within my fraternity
Coordinator for two autism awareness fundraisers raising over $10,000 last year (will be doing the same this year)
Member of Phi Alpha Delta (pre-law fraternity)
Member of Best Buddies/mentor (program for autistic children)
Volunteer (Habitat for Humanity)
Member of College Democrats
Summer internship as a Legal Assistant at a law firm

If anyone has any suggestions in what I would need to do in order to better my chances of admittance please let me know!

rcm987, you definitely have a good chance of getting in. I am assuming you’re looking to transfer in CAS with a polisci major?

As a college sophomore a 3.67 is a good GPA - out of your four years in college your first year tends to be your weakest year. The fact that your GPA has an upward trend from high school to university speaks for itself so I would definitely try to emphasize this somehow try mentioning what you did differently etc… Don’t worry about your high school record too much – its been two years and you ended up with a decent average.

Out of all the schools at BU, CAS sees the most transfer applicants and also accepts the most. That being said it is still relatively competitive. If you apply having declared a major it eliminate some of the uncertainty since you clearly have an idea of what you want to do.

I would maybe suggest maybe e-mailing some of the polisci faculty - mainly the department chair etc, introduce yourself, find out how the curriculum differs from UCF.

Also I am not so sure if this is true but I would think about transferring for spring semester since you wouldn’t have to worry competing for limited spots after the incoming freshmen have finished their application.

Yeah I am going to be applying to CAS. I did receive a “W” in the spring during my freshman year, but I explained the reasoning behind it in the additional comments area. I also wanted to know if I were to apply for spring and get accepted if for some reason I was unable to attend if I could defer the acceptance to the next Fall?
