High School
G.P.A.: 3.0

ECs: Decent

Community college
G.P.A.: 3.7 or above
ACT: Most likely the same but considering retaking them
ECs: Should be a lot better

I am applying to the UW as a transfer for fall quarter in February. My main problem is that by the time I apply to the UW, I will only have been in college for a quarter. It makes it even worse when I will be taking 20 credits the next two quarters in order to get the prerequisites for CSE and the UW wont see that in the admissions process.

Do I have a realistic chance?
What should I do to improve?
Should I take 20 credits for two quarters?
Should I wait on applying?

UW states that your hs grades are less important if you have taken at least 40 credits at a CC. Since your HS gpa is pretty low, and you will not have taken much CC…I would suggest continuing at CC and reapplying later.

If you are dying to get in next fall…go ahead and apply anyways. The worst thing that could happen is that you lose your application fee and reapply later.

Is there any way that they will be able to see the entire years worth of grades like CSE will since they review applications in the summer? It looks like my main chance is for winter but I feel that winter is a bad time to join a school, especially if it only leaves one or two chances to enter a really competetive major like CSE.

I don’t know what it’s like for transfer students, but as a high school senior filling out the freshman application (I’m Running Start, so I’m doing CC classes) I’m required to fill out information about my current quarter, winter quarter, and spring quarter, so they know my future credit load and the classes I’m taking. Like I said, I’m not sure if it’s the same for transfer students. The UW is really good at responding to questions via e-mail and phone. Shoot 'em one or call the admissions office, and if no one picks up be sure to leave a message because they WILL call you back.

That is a good point and I am glad you make it. I forgot about it. It doesn’t help my position much because although the classes I take matter, they only matter if I do well in them which admissions can’t garuntee. I will be sure to talk to them about it.

Yes, with transfer students you list out the courses you are planning on taking, while you wait for a decision. That will help you as far as showing your planning for a specific degree. But it won’t help as far as having at least 40 graded credits at cc from which to know what caliber of a student you are performing at for the college level, and will overlook high school.

You will have little chance to get in, but if I were you I’d take a very large credit load in CC so you can get out faster. Cut down on commuting time so you can up your credit load through online classes, it looks the same on the transcript. UW is awesome, but CC isn’t as bad as you’d think. I transferred from WSU to CC to get into UW and got rid of a bunch of annoying gen eds and got a good education out of it. WSU is the same as CC for most students, unless you take advantage of research programs like I did
