transfer chances - california LACs

So it has come to this: asking strangers on the internets to analyze and criticize my records because I am nervous about college acceptances.

I will be a sophomore transfer. I go to a Cal State now. I'm thinking about Pomona, Pitzer, and Occidental, and I already applied to UC Santa Cruz as a safety.

High school: 3.3 weighted GPA, 1 AP and 1 honors course, top 50% (I attended a very competitive public school), extensive involvement in music and theater programs, founder and president of Gay-Straight Alliance, some volunteer work, 2 part time jobs during school year and 1 full time job during the summer. 2200 SAT I, 690 Spanish Language, 790 English Literature. National Merit and National Acheivement Semi-Finalist.

College: Full four-year academic scholarship program. Member of community service organization and feminist activism group. Pre-music major. I'm taking a heavy course load both this and next semester. My first semester GPA is probably going to be around 3.5 - 3.65.

Other: I'm transferring because I want a higher level of academic expectation. I've moved around a lot, I'm African-American, I'm a girl, I play the piano (10 years), sing (5 years), and have spent lots of time working with the YMCA. I have a wide range of interests, and I hope that communicates well through my applications. I'm going to interview at all of these schools as well.

So whaddya think?

You should be good for Pitzer and Occidental. Pomona is iffy, because they take few transfers. Might want to look at Scripps...

My best friend goes to Scripps, but I've ruled it out. All girls and little diversity doesn't do it for me. Thanks for your input!

Does UCSC even take soph transfers? Most UCs don't. I agree with Scripps, you have the whole consortium.

It depends on the circumstances of any given year but for the most part UCSC does take soph transfers. I wouldn't have applied there if they didn't, lol. I guess I should look into Scripps some more, even though Pitzer/Pomona has the music program I want.

If you're interested in Pitzer/Pomona, it can't hurt to look at Scripps. The exact same diversity resources are available across the consortium (Pitzer is the most diverse in its own campus, but again, everything is shared) and the all-girls aspect is not that big of a deal given shared facilities. Talk to your friend, visit the school, ask to be put in touch with reps from any student orgs that interest you (especially if diversity is a particular concern of yours).

Scripps will give you a higher level of academic expectation than Pitzer and a better chance of enrollment than Pomona. However, I can't say enough that it's a cooperative environment...but do talk to your friend :-)

Best of luck!
