Transfer Chances: Elon, Flagler, Rhodes, University of Tampa, College of Charleston

I am a first-year student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I knew after my first quarter here that I wanted to transfer. The environment is extremely high-stress and fast-paced. The student body is closed-minded and generally anti-social. The weather is terrible to boot. I have decided that I would like to major in Psychology at a smaller, more liberal institution in a warmer climate. I would appreciate some opinions on my chances at the schools I mentioned.

High School GPA: ~3.4 unweighted(nationally ranked public school in PA)
SAT: 1250/1600 and 1900/2400
Current college GPA: 2.6(All A's and B's first quarter save one D in precalculus, pitiful, I know. I currently have an A in calculus)
Expected GPA after winter quarter: ~3.1
Expected GPA after spring quarter: ~3.4
Clubs: RIT Ambulance member and Premedical Association member

I missed a considerable amount of time earlier in the academic year due to an emergency appendectomy.

Because of my major, my course load had been science and math heavy, with only one liberal arts course(intro to psychology).

My mother suffered from a traumatic head injury caused by a car accident. She has since struggled with major memory loss, depression and anxiety. Her condition has given me a unique perspective on mental illness allowing me to write meaningful essays explaining my desire to study psychology.

If there's any other information that may help, let me know and I'll post it.

I'm still looking for other schools to apply to if anyone has suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Bump bump bump

Unfortunately, the only school I know about is Elon, and I’d say you have nothing to worry about getting in there. I’ve applied myself  Good luck.

Chance me?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1072869-what-do-you-think-my-chances.html

I appreciate it. You really think I’ve got a solid shot at Elon? It’s my top choice right now, so that would be a huge relief.

Anyone else want to provide a second opinion?

I won’t chance back because I’m really not in a position to accurately guess. Don’t take this the wrong way.

Thanks,
Michael

I would guess definitely at utampa and probably at cofc. Not sure about the others.

Thanks. UTampa was what I considered my safety school. I’m not particularly interested in attending, but I would rather be there than RIT.

Charleston seems like a good school in a great area. My only concern is their minimum 3.0 GPA requirement for OOS transfers. I will still complete my application, but they won’t be able to make a decision until my final grades are in.

I’d still love suggestions if anyone knows any similar schools that I have a chance at.

Thanks,
Michael

Check out Rollins and unc-wilmington for similar schools. Not sure about their psych programs tho.

Great. Know anything about UNC-Asheville? What life is like there and what kind of reputation the school holds? I’m a fly-fisherman, so I’d love to be in the mountains! Such a beautiful area. However, I do plan on going to graduate school so reputation will be somewhat important.

Thanks,
Michael

Bump. Opinions or suggestions, anyone?

I think you definitely have good chances.
Best of Luck to you! you are well qualified.
Good Luck!!

chance me back if you get a chance.

Shameless bump.

Chances, anyone?

Hey I’m currently a student at Flagler. I really enjoy it. Nice weather, small class sizes, & a laid back atmosphere. I’d say your chances of admission are pretty good. What do you want to do with a psych BA? If it’s research, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend Flagler. But you’ll get a great theoretical foundation & prep for grad school. Your essays are a very important part of your ap. Also come down for am interview & tour if you can!

That’s great! Nice to hear from a current student. I’m looking to get a Ph.D. eventually. Unsure whether I want to get it in clincal or experimental/cognitive psychology. Most likely clinical. Just today I spoke with admissions and the gentleman I spoke to was from near my hometown which was pretty cool. I think I made a good impression over the phone. Also, I plan on visiting during my spring break, which I’m really excited about. What’s your major?

Michael

Michael: Elon is all about demonstrated interest…make sure you find out who your admissions officer is there and keep communication lines open…

Oh hah I guess I forgot to mention that I am a psy student myself (sophomore)! I also want to get a Phd in Clinical (it’s very competitive) but I’ll be applying to experimental masters programs as well just in case. I’m a student ambassador so maybe you’ll have me as your tour guide hah how funny! But anyway, psych is pretty big at Flagler & I really like the program. You’ll need to be active in your pursuit of intensive research experience (I’ve applied to summer programs around the nation) because Flagler is still pretty young & not every professor has a lab. It’s not like at FSU where you could attain a lab position relatively easily. But you’ll get 100 times more personal attention etc. at Flagler. There are also counseling internships available in close proximity.

Haha… That’d be something! I’m really impressed with what I’ve heard about Flagler’s psych program. I don’t anticipate having too much of a problem finding research and I’ll be applying to several summer programs. I’ll be sure to let you know once I get my admission decision. Thanks again for your help.

Rodney- Elon is most likely out of the question. I’ll send a PM explaining.
