Transfer Chances (Emory)

So I'm applying as a sophomore transfer to Emory and am wondering what my chances are. Any input is appreciated.

Currently at: University of Tennessee (Honors Program)

Elementary Chinese I - A
Honors Eng Composition - A
Honors Intro Psychology - A-
Finite Mathematics (damn advisor told me to take it cuz i used to be business) - A
University Honors: Mathematics of Voting and Decision Making - A-

TOTAL GPA: 3.61

High School:
GPA: 3.34 UW (straight A's freshman year -> a D and a C senior year. def lost focus)
6 AP's and 8 Honors courses
ACT: 34

Rec letters:
1 from eng teacher whos been helping me w/my app.
1 from Chinese teacher who said I was her best student
1 from the lawyer i interned for who said in her letter that i am the best writer shes encountered in her career...pretty much a glowing rec.

College EC's:
nothing to special (no leadership positions)
Econ Club, Enviromental Club, Current Events Club, Students for Free Enterprise, Econ Honor Society, Chinese language table, community service club, 60+ hours of service, a few others..

College Honors:
summa cum laude as an honors student first semester
unv housing academic excellence award
phi eta sigma national honor society
gamme beta pi national honor society

HS EC's
nothing really except lots and lots of tennis. varsity tennis and junior competitive tennis. ive talked to the Emory coach a little bit about playing for them.
also national honor society and key club and maybe one or two others

I did do an internship with the lawyer i mentioned second semester senior year and ended up with a paid position for the summer. i was the primary paralegal for the firm for a couple weeks.

Essays:
My why Emory essay is really specific. I talk about my interest in neuroscience and public policy and how these two fields can compliment each other (decision sciences and applied neuroeconomics in policy making) and how i hope to double major in neuroscience/behavioral biology and international studies. I talk about all the resources Emory offers etc.

My personal statement talks about how I wasn't focused in HS and thought it was a joke, but expected college to be more intense. When I got to college I was ready to fully apply myself, but I was disappointed with the UT environment and offerings.

I also include an essay explaining that F second semester. I had an A- in there until the final paper, which i was unable to write. When I say unable to write I mean I spent hours on it and got nothing. I talk about how I felt my life was on hold waiting for transfer decisions (from other schools) and how that resulted in my inability to complete the paper.

Demonstrated Interest:
I know Emory takes this seriously and I definitely have too. I visited campus, emailed faculty, ordered a video, talked to a coach, I know an alumni, I've spoken to the director of transfer admissions in person, etc.

SO, my HS stats obviously suck except my ACT score, and my college GPA would have been good if not for that F. I know transferring to Emory is not nearly as competitive as fresh admissions, but does that F kill my chances? or the combination of that and my HS stats??

Thanks for reading.

maybe if i titled my thread something like “OMGZ PLZ HELP!!! CHANCE ME OR MY DADDY WILL BEAT ME” id get more responses…

bump. bump.

What happened with that “F” in Mythology of the American West? It sticks out like a sore thumb. It will likely sink you chances to get into Emory.

brahnema, what are some of the reasons that you don’t like Tennessee?

I don’t know Emory very well- but if you were specific about why, and you showed a lot of interest, I would say that you have a 30% to 40% chance of transferring. You seem qualified.

are you looking at UT? theres nothing too wrong with UT but its just not right for me… ive lived in knoxville all my life and need to get out for one. UT also doesnt have a neuroscience department or international relations and the asian studies department just took huge cuts. Plus, theres just not the diversity im looking for…in the student body and in course offerings. its a big research school so dont expect anything else. like i mentioned before about my advisor telling me to take FINITE math when i took ap calc in HS. also the majority of students dont care about school and actually dont want to be there they are just looking for the diploma, but you see that at most state schools and any non-selective school. UT is def. good if your in to chemistry or straight biology or any natural science, otherwise its lacking in academic rigor. also taking alot of cuts due to budget problems but so is every other school. it just seems to hurt schools like UT more because they never offered the variety of things top school do to begin with so the cuts make the list of available courses even shorter. All in all its a good school with some good oportunities but you have to look for them. If they offered what i wanted to major in I would have no problem staying and getting a free education…

PM me with any questions about UT.

ps. i changed my personal statement to be more about ive changed drastically during my first year and how my interests developed during this year through a research project i did and my most involved EC.
