Applying as an English major to NU WCAS and Georgetown College.
Puerto Rican Male
1st college GPA: 3.6, 25 credits (decent liberal arts school)
2nd college GPA: 3.88, 47 credits (community college) should be 4.0 but I took a tough general chemistry class and got a B- 3 semesters ago.
HS GPA: 3.4, Class Rank: 36/278
SAT score: (10/2007) Reading- 600, Math- 580, Writing- 720 (9/12 essay)

If it means anything I have a 4.0 in all 5 of my English courses taken in college.

My professors wrote me excellent recommendations (3 recommendations) and my high school counselor wrote a letter for me which details my personal struggles throughout HS and everything I had to overcome with a broken family.

I also wrote a page and a half letter explaining why I was forced to go from my first school to my second school because of unforeseen financial reasons.

Do you think I have a legitimate shot of admission at either school? I was rejected last fall for admission to Northwestern (no surprise)

90% of those admitted to NU as a transfer come from 4 year institutions. As you would imagine, CC students make up the other 10%. I’d say give it a shot since you have nothing to lose!

I knew I should have appealed that one Political Philosophy grade I got at my first school. I had an A going into the final exam and thought I wrote an excellent final but inexplicably received a B for the class and never got my final exam back. Would have meant the difference between a 3.65 and a 3.77.
Also should have never taken the chem class at my CC. If I had just taken the intro to chem course, I’m sure I’d have a 4.0 instead of a 3.89. Only two classes but I’m sure they’ll ruin me in the long run. :(

With community college transfers making up only 10% of the transfer class at NU each year, I’m going to guess that my upward grade trend since the B- in chemistry and application essays might be the only things that can save me. I’m assuming that the <30 students who transfer into NU from CCs all have perfect college GPAs, took the Calculus classes I avoided and might have attractive hooks too.

I’m usually optimistic about the college admissions process but now I’m pretty sure I’ll get rejected at Northwestern and Georgetown as well as UVA. Looks like UNC is the only school I can be realistically optimistic about.

TBH, give it a shot. From NU’s transfer guide (got it during my campus tour), “The mean college cumulative grade point average of admitted transfer students is approximately 3.7 on a 4 point scale. The majority transfer from four-year institutions; about 10% transfer from community colleges. Slightly more than 50% transfer after one year of college, rather than after two years.”
