hi.
I currently go to carnegie mellon university, and I am considering transferring to Cornell ILR.

However, my gpa is only a 3.33.

Should I apply a semester later or go ahead and apply for the spring semester?

hi.

what courses have you taken at carnegie mellon? whats your major there? carnegie mellon is quite a fine institution…the ILR school has such a more small school feel…

Now, I am a political science major but I started out as a Bio major at carnegie mellon. So far Ive taken one chemistry course, two calculus courses-one in multivariate, one econ course, one english class, 4 history classes, 1 statistics class, and 1 foreign language class. The reason my gpa is on the low side is cuz of my chemistry and intro calculus grades which were c’s during my first semester. But ever since, Ive made an improving trend.

I don’t imagine it would be easy with that gpa even from carnegie mellon. You will have to make up for with other things on the application like EC’s and essays, but it would all need to be spectacular as there are other people with much higher gpa’s you will be competing with that most likely also have strong EC’s, essays, recommendations, work experience, etc…

I think you would have a much better chance if you pulled it up to like a 3.5-3.6 which is possible if you got like a 3.8+ this fall, but to do that you would have to apply for fall instead as your fall grades this year won’t be on the transcript they are looking at.

a 3.3 from Carnegie Melon is more impressive IMHO than a 3.5 or higher from a community college…

give me a list of all the courses you have taken and i can give you a rough estimate as how they would apply to ILR’s curriculum…

Where did I say a 3.5 from a community college is more impressive than a 3.3 from Carnegie Mellon? I would strongly disagree with that. I would say a 3.9-4.0 at a CC is more impressive than a 3.3 from CM though, and he will be competing against those plus other university transfers with higher GPA’s. I don’t know if you agree with that, but there is a very large difference between a 3.3 and 3.9+ regardless of college. A 3.5 from CM would look much more impressive than a 3.3 though especially with an upward trend.

He listed the courses he took in the third post btw. One of those history classes should count for the western traditions requirement assuming at least one was American history, you should have the science requirement filled, maybe a cultural perspectives depending on what regions the history classes covered. ILR does recommend 2 composition classes (pretty much needs composition in the title or else won’t transfer as comp) and both micro and macro econ before transferring.

Why do you want to transfer though? You are coming from a great university and your reasons will be very important. It is obviously a lot easier for a community college student to justify transferring.

carnegie mellon stresses too much of its curriculum on computers and i am looking for more of a well-rounded liberal arts education.
