Transfer chances for UT?

I am currently working on a Bachelor of arts in political science, however, I want to transfer to UT Austin. My gpa isnt that great – its a 3.5. I am a decent writer so I am not worried too much about the essay part of the application. I am just wondering if I even stand a chance. I will have completed most of my basics by next spring, which is when I plan to transfer. I’ll be an in-state transfer. I have a 3.5 GPA, about 20+ community service hours, I play in the university’s symphony, and I’ve had a part time job for 7 months. I am also Hispanic (idk if that will help in the application process). Now I know my resume isn’t THAT impressive. Is there any other good schools in Texas that offer good polisci classes? Thanks

How many hours do you have? Are you currently at a CC? A 3.5 doesn’t automatically disqualify you by any means, it’s just slightly below the average gpa for admitted students into liberal arts. In regards to your last question, are you only looking for public universities? Many large state schools will have good liberal arts professors and classes. I’d apply to A&M, and maybe Texas Tech, U of H, UTD? The best thing you can do in your remaining time is really buckle down on classes. Try to get your gpa up to 3.7ish and get to know some of your professors, especially in your poli sci classes, so that you can get good recs.

I’m currently at a public university (UTRGV). By the time I’m looking to transfer I would have completed about 40 hours, most of them are gen ed courses. I have not started on my major yet since I decided to change from cj to polisci this semester. I will be a sophomore (3rd semester) after fall 2016. I’m taking two more courses during this coming summer so hopefully that’ll bump up my GPA a bit. And yeah if UT Austin doesn’t work out (which more than likely won’t) i want to try another public university with good/challenging polisci courses…I’m also doing an internship and applying to be a board member for this community clean-up events to build up my resume. I reeaaalllyyy want to get into UT lol

If you bump up your GPA to a 3.6+ you have a decent chance, it’s really not that unlikely. And building up your resume is great, but don’t do it if it will hurt your ability to study and make A’s. Your GPA is the most important factor in getting accepted, by far.

@marcomartinezx I disagree. I was accepted into Economics, the most competitive major in liberal arts, with a 3.5. However, even as a decent writer, you should worry about the essay part. Because you need to come off as a great writer. I mean, this is liberal arts we are talking about. You being hispanic will definitely help you in the application process.
