Transfer Chances / Help on how To transfer?

Currently, I am at Texas State University. I am a freshman and will be taking 31 transferrable hours.

I want to transfer into University of Texas at Austin for Fall 2009, the beginning of my sophomore year.

I'd like to get into the communications school, but I know that is a very hard school to get into. I wouldn't mind going into education, then transferring into communication later in the year.

First, what kind of GPA would give me a great shot at getting in? Right now, 8 weeks into college, I have a 3.6. Do I have a good shot with a 3.6?

Next, I'm confused with the process. Will I apply for transfer around January, send them my first semester grades and the classes I'm enrolled for the second semester? Of course, I will only have 16 hours completed the point when the application is due. Will they consider my high school grades? When will I figure out if I'm admitted?

Thanks!

I don't know about the requirements for the Communications program so I can't help you there. But as for the rest, I can tell you what I did. You can apply before you have 30 hours but you must have it completed before they will make a decision. That is, after the spring semester, you send in an updated transcript and after that they will make your admission decision. I did this this past spring, and after I submitted my spring grades, I was notified online about two weeks after that.

Good luck!

Oh I forgot something. After you have the 30 hours of college credit, they are not going to care about your high school grades. They will require a high school transcript, not for admission, but to verify high school course requirements. An example of what this is about is you are required to have taken two years of foreign language in high school. If you haven't, you have to take two semesters of one in college to have that deficiency removed.

Hope this helps.

Hi Fiyero , I have a question for you , this spring I want to transfer to the UT Austin as sophomore standing , My major is math , and I am from China , but I am not the international transfer , actually I am a permanent resident in Nevada , I am attending college here , At the time of application I have 28 credits , and I have 7 credits more in progress , that is , I will have 35 credits at the end of the year ,so can I update my transcript ? i wonder that they will make a decision before I send my updated transcript. Do they still want the high school transcript ? ( It is so hard to get the high school transcripts from China and there are a lot troubles) , please help me,
Thank you in advance !

They will not make a decision until they see a transcript with 30 or more transferable hours. Apply before then and send the updated transcript when the semester is complete.

thank you flatxca , the problem is that this semester is end at December 20 something , it is not too late to send the updated transcript ? I wonder I will miss the decision before they make .

Send it when you complete the classes. If they want to see your current courework completed, they won’t make a descision until they recieve the most up to date transcript. At least thats how it worked for me when I applied as a transfer last semester.

Thank you very much, ampzor , you encourage me , and I will email them to ask if I can send my updated transcripts . do I need the HS transcript with 28 credits ( 7 credits in progress) ? I have my HS diploma from my country ( we use A,B,C,D ) , Do you think it is OK ? and we don’t offer the SAT , ACT .
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

You don’t need to send your high school transcript until after your admitted. I am not sure whether or not you need to send it with 28 credits. I did, but I was just being safe.

Thanks ampzor, do you think the transfer essay is hard to write ? I am poor at English writting , and I don’t know if they regard the essays as the important part for adimission ? Have a good day o(∩_∩)o…

Hi, ampzor , I want to transfer to UT AUSTIN as a sophomore standing at spring 2010 , I am interested in the math, I know that the math dept ranking is high , But I don’t know if the math dept is good ? actually I am from China and I am a resident in Nevada now , is it hard to get into UT AUSTIN from Nevada ? ( my GPA is 3.6 with 28 credits and 7 more credits in progress , the classes I took and I will take :
summer 2008 : ESL —B
fall 2008 : 1. CALCULUS 1 ----A
2. GENERAL PHYSICS I —A
3. ENGLISH —C+

spring2009: 1.FINITE MATHEMATICS—A
2. CALCULUS II—A
3.GENERAL PHYSICS II —A
4.INTRO TO STATISTICS—B

fall 2009 : 1. CALCULUS III
2. PRINC-MACROECONOMICS
Language : Chinese , English , some Japanese . but I don’t have TOEFL score .
so do you think I have a shot for the UT AUSTIN ?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE !

I really have no idea if the math department is good or not. You’ll have to go on their website and look to see what the faculty/research are like. With a 3.6, you have a very good chance of getting in. Just keep the grades up.

The essays weren’t too bad. When you get done writing them, have someone on this forum read them and make corrections.

Good luck!

Great, I’m really appreciate it , ampzor, I will try my best on the essays . UT AUSTIN is a friendly school , right ? My English is poor , I am afraid of I can’t make any friends there, Thanks again , o(∩_∩)o…

The students can be nice, but many of the students have already met their friends or they have friends from high school they hang out with. So the only way your going to meet people is if you join some clubs. I am in this situation now. I only know a handful of people and I am trying to expand that by joining a few clubs.

A 3.6 in state puts you in a good place. Out of state, I don’t know. The only OOS people I knew had higher but that may not be typical.

I’m a math major. What specifically do you mean by “I know that the math dept ranking is high , But I don’t know if the math dept is good”? Do you mean are the professors good at teaching? If so, then like any department, that will vary widely. Getting referrals from students and the wise use of pickaprof will aid greatly in getting those professors which are good at teaching the subject.

I agree with ampzor in that the students are friendly but you will need to make an effort to meet friends. Transfers come into a situation where everyone seems to know people already. You’ll probably need to make the first move in meeting people but if you do that, you’ll be fine.

Thank you guys for replying , if I am admitted by the school , I’d like to join bunch of clubs to make some friends ,thanks your suggestion ,ampzor !!!
I just checked math dept out , profs and their research are awesome ! I am so worried that I can’t get into with a low GPA from out of state . and I don’t have any ECs , but I work full time job since I moved to US , will the admission consider it ?
Thanks again

I doubt they will consider the work factor unless you specifically talk about it in your optional essay.

Thanks ampzor, what is the optional essay mean? the limited words required ? can I only explain why I don’t have any ECs ? UT austin need two original essays , right ?

Two required and one option for hardships or to explain something you feel they won’t see when viewing your application.

thanks , ampzor 非常感谢! o(∩_∩)o…
