Transfer chances @ Penn

Sophomore at Williams College looking to transfer to UPenn

High School Stats:

SAT: 2230 (670 Reading, 800 Math, 760 Writing)
ACT: 34 (30 E, 36 M, 33 R, 35 S, 12 Essay)

Prospective Econ Major/Italian Minor - Econ Classes here: A, A, A, A-, A- (2 A-s are from the same prof)
I only took one Italian class at Williams, as I maxed off on the curriculum here - it's another reason I'd love to go to Penn - it has a really strong Italian language and culture program

Extracurriculars/Jobs:
Statistics TA, First Gen Advisory Board, Paid Calc Tutor, Paid Econ Tutor, Tour Guide, College Council Assistant Treasurer, Finance Committee

Interned at BNY Mellon this past summer, have a recommendation from an MD
Recommendations are from professors who know me well and would probably characterize me as among the most enthusiastic and engaging students they've taught at Williams

Hooks: First Gen, Gay(?)

The catch here is that I applied to transfer, as was accepted, to Penn last year. My parents weren't supportive of my decision because I wasn't out as openly gay to them and they didn't understand much of my reason to transfer. I articulated this to the admissions office and they seemed receptive.

What do you guys think?

Bump please

Bump ~

Your GPA is a bit low and you do not have anything outstanding in your application (apart from your SAT and ACT scores which are good). However, i think you should apply and you have a good chance. Good luck!

Being homosexual is not really a “hook.”

You should say which school in UPenn you are eyeing. If you’re thinking about Wharton, then note that, according to a person I trust, there are about ~10 external transfers to Wharton yearly.

Sorry if this wasn’t explicit- I’m applying to the college of arts and sciences as an Econ major and I’m aware that the overall acceptance rate floats around 10%, so the cas acceptance rate is, at the lower bound, is 10% although it’s realistically probably between 14-17% given the hypothetical Wharton transfer rate.
I know that being gay in itself isn’t a hook, but my reason why I didn’t go last year is embedded in this fact. (Although I have heard of penn “recruiting” gay kids). Also my GPA when I applied last year was only a 3.54, and I was accepted. And to put some context around my GPA, average GPA here at Williams floats around 3.3. I thought my 3.6x was great given the caliber of school that Williams is.

Bump please

Bump again

Transfer chances are even less than regular chances…so don’t get your hopes up.

Oh okay thanks! I guess it’s just a waiting game now!

I also was accepted last year if that means anything, don’t know if you fully read my post.

That won’t make much of a difference.

Well you have done all that you can do. Your application is in, now you have to sit back and wait. The transfer acceptance rate is 10% as you know. The good news is that is on par with the freshman acceptance rate, and not ridiculously low 1% like Harvard. Also good is that you were accepted last year. If you articulated well the reasons you declined last year and what has changed this year, you may get in. Nobody here knows for sure. Best of luck.

Thanks skieurope, I appreciate your objectivity! Haters gon’ hate.

Bump please
