Transfer Chances? Reaches? Safeties?

Hello,

I was asked to post my stats on another page but never got any responses. I am posting them again here. What I would like help with are my chances to an ivy league transfer as my reach some good fit schools and then some schools that I can apply to where it is not so competitive to get into. I feel like I have no perspective on what the admissions process at Ivy's because on one hand I hear that its really competitive because there are lots of transfers from top ten schools but then I also hear that it just depends. Here are my stats, please tell me what you think.

What I am looking for in a school is:

-preferably attatched to a really great medical school since I will be applying and I feel that it would help my chances
-EXCELLENT financial aid (that is one of the big reasons I am applying to the ivys)
-acceptance of minorities/diverse (this doesnt mean I dont want to go say like to the south but I just mean that I want to not feel like I stick out like a sore thumb there)
-Near an urban center (NY, DC, Boston, etc)

The school of my dreams is H for so many reasons.

Postings from parents very much encouraged!!!!!!

THANKS!

PS. Do you recommend that I take the SAT IIs?

Rice University.

It is also attached to the biggest medical center in the world.

Thanks! Is that really hard to get into?

Thanks! Is that really hard to get into?

[/quote]

Not significantly, especially since you are out-of-state. Rice loves out-of-state applicants.

Any other ideas for safety schools? And what did you think about my list for reaches and good fits?

Given this year's acceptances, you have a shot at all those schools.

I do not know which school could serve as safety.

GWU? Hahahaha.

Im confused. What do you mean by given this years acceptances? Were they unsually slack this year? Dont get the joke about GWU.

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.

It seems so.

Well, GWU is typically a "safety" school for Georgetown admits. Hence the phrase "Georgetown Waitlist University."

Thanks for the reply. But one thing I do not get is what the 06 admittances have anything to do with the 07? Does it go according to some sort of trend? Im not trying to be smart I just dont get it thats all.

No such trend need be drawn. What the '06 acceptances show is that top schools, including Harvard, make exceptions for certain applicants. If you have a shot, you should apply. You never know what will happen next year.

Thanks for your responses. You really shed some new light on my situation. And you also helped me find Rice which is place I never would have thought to apply. I appreciate it. But just as a side note, what do you mean by they made expections for certain applicants. Are you saying that my creds are not that strong but they have made tons of exceptions so they may make one for me? If so, how could I strengthen my stats. I know my hs grades were not ivy worthy by any stretch of the imagination.

It is not just your HS grades. The mere fact that you are applying from a CC puts you at a disadvantage. Harvard rarely admits CC applicants, and if they do, they usually admit less than 5.

Yale, on the other hand, seems to like promising CC applicants. Rice frequently admits CC applicants from out-of-state (and athletes in-state), and WashU is pretty generous. Cornell and Columbia are also highly selective. Georgetown is also generous with transfers. I met an excess of CC students during transfer orientation. I do not know about JHU. Stanford also rarely admits CC students, and if they do, the students almost always seem to originate from a CCC.

I would choose Rice above any school but Yale, Stanford, and Harvard. 2,800 undergrads, laid back atmosphere, the world's biggest medical center right next door (it literally is, since the Baylor College of Medicine belongs to Rice), a good metropolitan area, beautiful campus, and a communal atmophere engendered by the residential college system make for a wonderful undergraduate experience.

Thanks alot. That was quite a thorough response. Your perspective is very much appreciated, and it gave me a better sense of what I am up against all things considered. And I will definitely be looking more into Rice U.

Thanks! I really appreciate it!

Keep in mind that Rice also offers excellent financial aid. With, I think, the fourth highest per-capita endowment, Rice lowers tuition and offers enormous financial aid for students in need.

In fact, my friend just sent me this link:
http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2004/08/why_rice_univer.html

WoW! Thanks for that article! I was looking on the web site and it seems like a great match for me! Like an undiscovered gem!

Thanks again!!!

Yes. Rice is a hidden treasure:)

is WashU generous with transfers? even after a year?

I have heard that Wash U is pretty generous with transfers.

nspeds you look like a very knowledgable guy about the transfer process. In light of this thread, can you help asses my chances to the following schools: NYU, Georgetown, Northwestern, Rice, and Univ. of Chi-town?

Here are my stats:
3.9 CCC GPA
Employed as a Math/English Tutor
Have short stories and poems published
Vice President of Anthropology Club
Doing research this Fall on English Literature (still narrowing my subject)
Honors Student
May join Speech Debate team this Fall

HS:
2.4 GPA (low, but can explain)
SAT: Have not taken
President of Interact Club sponsored by Rotary Club (known worldwide)
Won essay writing contest and awarded a trip to Valley Forge, Philadelphia, and Washington DC

Also, can you/anyone give me a list of reaches/matches/safeties with the priv. universities I listed above, and possibly more if you have some in mind?

Edit: Preferably schools with good English undergrad programs (I am an English major, in case you don't notice :) )

Rice downside-----> It's TEXAS :P CA>Texas....UCLA, UCSD, UCB-->UCSF, UCI, UCD (cow town yes, but pretty good school) all have excellent pre-med programs. UCB students have very good numbers going to UCSF which is the #3 med school in the country after Johns Hopkins. Although schools like H, P, Y, JHU are amazing, UC's should not be left in the dust amid the IVY's because they are also among the top 50 universities in the country (UCB AND UCLA being in the top 20). Plus they are at least 20k cheaper for CCC students. (My #1 choice is JHU w/ UCLA being #2, UCSD3, and UC Berkeley4)
