Transfer chances, recommendations (econ)

I’ve posted on this site several times regarding Claremont McKenna College, the school that up until now has been the only college that I have really been pursuing as a transfer student seriously. After being waitlisted there and eventually turned down for fall admission as a sophomore, I have no realized that I need to start looking seriously at other colleges besides CMC that I can apply to next year. I wanted to run a couple of these schools be all of you to see if they are realistic options, and also see if you could offer me anymore suggestions..

I am currently an economics major at Northeastern University in Boston but am not too happy with the situation there. I am looking to transfer to a school that not only has a stronger econ program but is overall more challenging. Right not I am looking at the following schools (in order of interest):

CMC
Georgetown
Northwestern
Rice
NYU
George Washington (Safety)

After a year at Northeastern I have a 3.75 gpa including a couple honors courses. I have also been involved in several activities (research assistant, peer tutor in calculus and economics, active member and officer in college republicans, student government, etc.). I wanted to ask everyone what my chances were at these colleges assuming I keep my grades up, receive good recs, etc, and also, ask for any additional recommendations that would either be a match or stretch for me (nothing way out of reach like a U Chicago)

Thanks!

bump? anyone?

is claremont mckenna a lac or something?

is it prestigious?

cuz i know a guy from my school went there, and i thought he was ivy material so i was surprised.

"is it prestigious" -- i hope that's not your main criterion for judging schools, ilovecalifornia. ;)

um i'm in college so its not like this school being prestigious has any effect on me

Yea, its a very prestigious school in southern California that is very strong in economics and government - 75% of students major in one of these fields. Ranked highly in the USNWR lac rankings (top 10 I believe?). Not too strong in other fields, at least in relation to Pomona which is right across the street (along with Pitzer, Harvey Mudd and Scripps), but is becoming much stronger in other areas, namely the sciences.

Also, is anybody familiar with the University of British Columbia? As I continue my search, I have began to look internationally and UBC seems be not only a school that is well respected throughout North America and the world, but also offers a very strong econ program. Is UBC as well respected throughout the states as some say? What US schools might it be comparable to? Any thing else on the school would be appreciated.

Thanks!

thanks for info...

my cousin goes to ubc and no its name isn't exactly recognizable or respected...not in the US at least. but it is suppose to be one of the best schools in canada i suppose.

It's certainly not as recognizable as Berkeley or UVA or one of the other top publics, but based on what little I know, it is just as strong.
