Transfer Chances/Recommendations

I know it's early, but how many schools should I apply to for transfer? Is 5 or 6 going overboard? I really, really, really want to transfer from my state school. I need to be away for college. My major is linguistics. SAT: 2170 (retaking though), ACT: 30 (only took it once, also retaking). HS GPA was around a 94 unweighted, and I took 10 AP classes, 2 college classes, and 3 foreign languages. So far, I'm looking at: McGill, Reed, U. Chicago. Can anyone chance me on those 3? I know that Chicago is difficult for anybody to transfer to. Also, any recommendations on schools I should look into, preferably those that give fairly decent financial aid packages...and are need-blind? In regards to fit, Berkeley is pretty much perfect for me in every way except for residency/cost), so if anyone can think of schools similar to that, I'd love to hear about those. Reed seems pretty similar, and people have told me that Oberlin and Brown would be great fits as well (but Oberlin doesn't have linguistics as a major, and Brown is too hard to get into).

Thanks

I think Middlebury would be a perfect fit based on what you’ve said. I think they are known for their international programs, so I imagine they’d be well equipped to serve a linguistics major. I’m not sure what their financial aid is like, but like the schools you mentioned I’m sure it’s quite difficult to transfer to, but it seems great for you.

The core of UChicago and Brown’s open curriculum seem like polar opposites to me, as does their reported vibes. I also don’t think Reed and Cal are very similar.
