Hey all, do you think that I have a decent chance at Dartmouth/Brown/Yale/Hopkins/Tufts/(suggest a school) with these stats?

I'm considering transferring from Trinity College in Hartford, CT as an incoming junior

-English major
-Honors Program (top 3% of school body accepted)
-3.8 GPA (4.0 last semester) expected to be closer to 4.0 by the middle of my sophomore year
-a few good ec's (student newspaper, etc)
-1390 SAT I's (750 V 640 M) 1500 SAT II's (740 Writ 760 Lit)
-National Merit letter of commendation or some such thing
-excellent recs (one from a Dartmouth alum professor who is convinced I belong there)
-Dean's list/faculty honors both semesters so far
-one of my essays for a seminar was chosen out of entire freshman class of 2008 to be published as an example for the incoming freshman class of 2009
-I tok a year off after high school where I interned at NPR for 8 months and backpacked Vietnam for 2 months
-dad is alum of Hopkins
-family friend is president of tufts

HOWEVER
I had close to a 3.1 or 3.2 GPA in high school. This might hurt?

So what does everyone think my chances are? And do you have any suggestions in terms of other schools or transfer tactics that I should consider looking into?

Thanks so much.

I think you have a good chance at all your schools, but probably Hopkins is your best chance since you have legacy. The fact that there are so many English major transfers might make it more difficult.

I'm tranferring from Wesleyan to Harvard in the fall and I had really similar stats (Sociology and American Lit. double major, 3.85 GPA, 1430 SATs and around the same SATII's). However, I would say you might want more extracurriculars--something a little different maybe. Also, I think the rec from the dartmouth prof should be great--I'm convinced my recs had a strong influence on my acceptance (1 was from my advisor that I'm doing research for and developing a course with and the other was from a well known prof. in the english dept. who went to harvard and used to be at princeton with toni morrison.) Also, as a previous Wesleyan student, you might want to consider wes--they really have an amazing english department (with professors that are beyond amazing), though I really don't know what you're looking for, but based on the english, that might be a consideration. (I'm transferring because of issues with disabled acessability, i absolutely loved the school aside from that and would have stayed had this not been such an issue). Anyway, my best advice is to stay involved in trinity throughout the transfer process...

Larry Bacowww

well, I'd say if he's a family friend of Tufts, that'd probably help? I had a friend whose family was friends with the President of a certain university-- and he got in. So I'm guessing that would help out a lot.

Also, maybe I skipped over this (in which case, I'm sorry for being so careless), but what are your reasons for transferring? Try to develop those reasons.

Good luck! :)
