Transfer Chances to UVA, UNC Chapel-Hill, Georgetown, Penn

Hey everyone,

I have just my first semester at the University of Maryland, College Park. but the stats that follow include my projections for second semester as well. Thanks.

College GPA: ~3.75
HSGPA:3.4

ACT:32

College ECs:
Research associate at econ department
Investment club (just member)
Honors Council (board member)

High School ECs
interned at lobbying firm (this past summer)
Varsity softball 2 years
co-editor of year book
president of politics club
founded an economics club.
worked for county econ department

Couple of questions:

Will a couple of Cs first semester kill my chances, even though I end up applying with a 3.75 (Note: This will probably not happen, but anything can happen and I have not gotten final grades).

I will probably apply next year as spring transfer. What are the pros and cons of this??

My school uses +/- grading. Will this be taken into account when colleges look at my GPA?

4.Any other schools you can recommend?

Applying as economics major.

Schools I am applying to: UVA, UNC Chapel-Hill, Georgetown, Penn(reach).

May I ask where the 3.75 GPA projection comes from? If it’s speculation, I find that the best possible result usually doesn’t happen.

In my opinion, if you can get the 3.75 GPA you have great chances at all except Penn and Georgetown. Merry Christmas!

It is a speculation, but not the best case scenario.

Merry Christmas to you as well!

What classes did you take your first semester? A lower grade may not be as damaging if the course is known to be a *****.

I don’t really know what your chances are, but I think a 3.75 would kill your chance at Penn. You have a good chance at the other schools though.

If you do get a 3.9+, you have a good shot at Penn IMO. You have a strong high school record, and that still matters at this point.

I think that a 3.75 is acceptable for Penn if:

(i) his university is not a grade inflater or community college
(ii) he didn’t get the 3.75 in filler classes like introductory sociology, elementary calculus, low level science classes, psychology, philosophy, etc.

The average GPA for Maryland is 3.0

I just noticed that your high school GPA is kind of bad. That may hurt your chances at Penn. Although your high school GPA matters less now than it did last year, it still matters. In a couple more semesters your high school GPA will become pretty insignificant.

Thanks for the input everyone. I realize that a couple of those schools are out of reach, but I have my heart set on UVA anyway. Hopefully, it is one of the more likely schools on my list.

Can anyone help me with the questions I wrote in the original post?
