I'm sure these threads pop up all over the place, so sorry in advance.

I had a 3.1 unweighted, 3.5 weighted GPA in high school, along with a 31 on my ACT. I pretty much just slacked off as much as possible and coasted by. I got into UW-La Crosse, the second best public school in Wisconsin, a school with very comparable academic requirements to UW-Madison, but was placed on the waiting list for Madison. They denied me, but asked if I would like to be put on a second waiting list. I chose not to for some odd reason, and two of my friends with lesser grades than I got in about a week later. Now I am looking at transferring to Madison, but my GPA first semester at UWL was a 2.7. Yet again I just slacked off and coasted by, skipped some classes (college temptations stink!), etc. Anyway, a lot has been going on in my life and I have gotten my priorities straight, and am left with a few questions.

1) What are my chances of transferring to Madison with a 2.7 college GPA, a 3.1 unweighted/3.5 weighted high school GPA, and a 31 ACT?

2) What are my options assuming I am not accepted for transfer? Is it possible to transfer after 2nd semester with an improved GPA, and still have time to attend the fall 2009 term at Madison?

To be honest, I think you need two full more semesters at UW-L in order to perfect your GPA. If you get two 4.0s, you can be well over a 3.5 cumulative GPA and you would show a tremendous upward trend in grades. I'm not sure if UW Madison offers Spring Admissions for transfers, so you may have to wait till Fall 2010.

If they offer spring do spring. If they don't, or even if you just want to, try now. You can try again next fall or, if they have it, spring. It will help if you are applying to a less competitive school within Wisc.

I've been told that it's relatively easy to transfer to UW-Madison with a 3.0+, so I was just curious how far back that 2.7 sets me. I don't think it will be incredibly difficult to raise my GPA to 3.0+ after spring semester.

i don't think 2 more semesters of a 4.0 are necessary to compensate for your current gpa...if you could put in two semesters of 3.5 work you would be in really good shape...check the xfer policies for the school, but usually you cannot apply for xfer two semesters in a row...as it stands at this moment, i dont think you are that competitive of an applicant but its worth a shot, stranger things have happened

yeah i don't think i'm that competitive either but i'll apply anyway and see what happens. grades in my opinion you're in assuming it's not that much harder to transfer from out of state and i don't see why that would be the case. good luck to you to i'll see ya at camp randall! haha
