I am currently a first-year student at Bucknell University, and I would to transfer to a better school. I am planning on double majoring in Economics and Chinese, and I'm currently pulling a 3.58 GPA. I want to go to the best school I can possibly get into, preferrably in the New England area, or the midwest. I have heard that it is often easier to gain acceptance as a transfer student, but I have heard that the opposite is true for the Ivies. So far I am looking at Carleton and Macalester (in Minnesota) but I would really like to try for a school like Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, Amherst, or Williams. Is this a pipe dream or do you think I might have a chance?

well Jane, good luck to you, as a first year transfer, you got to let us know your high school background, your SAT score, as they are still extremely important in admissions. Good luck with everything, and you can have my spot at Cornell!

Mediocre high school stats :(

1310 SAT (660 V, 650 M)
-600's in SAT IIs
-mostly A-'s, B+, B's in AP/Honors at tough prep school junior year.
-improved since freshman year, when I took easy classes and slacked off ( 2 C's or C+'s) , thus getting behind in math.
-good essay writer
-lots of leadership (esp. athletically)
-very accomplished athletically

I barely got into Bucknell as a recruited athlete. I was waitlisted and got lucky. However, I feel I am capable of much more, and I don't really like it at Bucknell. It's not a very intellectually stimulating environment, and is extremely homogenous This bothers me, and I would like to go somewhere better. I know it is going to be a stretch, but do I have a hope in the world?

What makes you think you are deserving of something "better?" Bucknell is a good school.

andrw, thats a pretty harsh comment. She deserves w.e. she feels she deserves. If that is a better education and a better environment, then so be it.

I never said I "deserve" something better. I would just like something better. I want a better environment, but I won't go through the mess of transferring just to get a better environment. I will, however transfer if I can get a better education. I just want the best I can get. Maybe it can't get any better for me, but I was just wondering if it can. I appreciate all the constructive input, and I will be talking to my high school college counselor when classes resume, as I am home right now. But for now, keep giving me your input. Thanks.

Just a note Carleton is going to be really hard to transfer to because they over accepted last year. Check out Grinnell and Knox colleges.
