Transfer Chances with 2 W's in Calc 1

Applying: UCSD (TAG), UCI
Major: Computer Science
Pre-reqs: core courses and many CS classes done by spring, missing Discrete Math
IGETC: done by spring
GPA: 3.74 currently (3.74–3.79 by the end of fall)
EC's: PTK President, VSA Club VP

I screwed up big time in Calc 1 by dropping out twice and had to petition to take it a third time. It was all out of laziness (never doing homework nor studying) and ditching lecture, so I couldn't write an excuse for it—only how I'd developed from it. Will this severely, adversely affect my chances of admission? What about for grad school?

Hopefully they'll see that I can do well in Math. I got an A after getting two W's and am on track for getting an A this semester in Calc 2.

I was thinking of applying to Cal since it's possible for me to get a 3.79 with straight A's this semester, but with 2 W's in Calc 1 and unfinished courses (CS 61A, 61C, 70, EL ENG 42), I don't think I have much of a chance. Should I go for it?

Thank you! :)

Academic Performance:
3.53 - B in Precalc and Anthro
3.40 - W's in Calc 1 and English, C in Honors History
3.66 - Summer 2010, B in Government
4.00 - W in Calc 1
4.00 - fyeah!
----- - no summer school this time
3.75–4.00 this semester (with the 3.75 coming from a possible B in physics - mechanics)

pretty good chance if u finished prereqs… UCSD very stricts with their preqre needs to be done. i say 60%

If you want to apply to Berkeley CS, you may want to check other community colleges to find the lower division courses, to avoid schedule crowding after transfer if you get in.

According to [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) :
Laney has courses that articulate to CS 61A and EE 42.
Diablo Valley has a course that articulates to CS 61C.

@ferrari - thanks for the chance. I’m pretty sure I’ve nailed all the prereqs except for Discrete Mathematics, of which I don’t know if it’s an actual prereq. Hope I get in! :)

@ucbalumnus - thanks for the tip. I will be taking three or four classes next semester—three of which are Calc 3, Linear Alg/DiffE, and Electro/Magnetic Physics—so I’m not sure if I want to tack another class on for fear of not getting solid A’s. With that said, I’ve taken eight CS classes to prepare myself as best as I can. Berkeley’s CS 61C class is “Great Ideas in Computer Architecture,” and I’ve taken a very similar course labeled “Computer Architecture” (minus the “Great Ideas”) although it is not articulated in the agreement. :)

I did look at eight other CC’s within driving distance of me, though, and none of them have CS 61A or 61C articulated, either. I think some of them do have classes that cover topics similar to the CS 61 series of classes, including my own CC, but they’re not officially articulated in the agreement.

Oh, and there is a course that articulates to EL ENG 42 at my own CC, but Electro/Magnetic Physics is a prerequisite and I won’t be finishing that until next semester so :(

calc 3, la, de, physics e+m in one semester? best of luck dude lol

^ some people just got the talent to do it. Dont hate :)

Yup. I’m gonna pray every time I go to bed, give grace before eating dinner, donate to charity, and stop stepping on ants lol.
