I think I would sell some of my limbs to go to Brown, but I don’t know if I have what it takes academically. Feel free to be harsh.

I am currently going into my sophomore year as an art history major at the University of Kentucky. I’m a first generation college student, and I’m not sure if that helps or hurts. I took 19 hours in the first semester of Freshman year, maintained a 3.9, and finished with university honors, as well as a member of National Society of Collegiate Scholars. I spent my second semester studying abroad in France, which is unprecedented for UK Freshman to do, and I came back having done exceptionally in all my classes there. I am now fluent in French.

I am going to apply for transfer for Fall 2013 because I have mandatory follow up classes at UK for my study abroad, plus I have to finish out a contract with my job at the US Attorney’s office, but I’m going to be once again taking 19 hours this year, and I plan to keep my GPA no lower than a 3.9.

I think college is overall going well for me, but the problem was my high school career.

I graduated high school with a 3.5 gpa and a 29 ACT, which is awful, but I was involved in theater, academic tournaments, Future Business Leaders of America, Teaching Tolerance, environmental club, spanish club, and several other organizations. I also took every AP and honors course offered at my high school (which was a small school in Eastern Kentucky, so there weren’t many).

I want to go to Brown because the art history program, atmosphere, and general academics at my state school are absolutely terrible, and I love Brown from what I’ve seen of it and from knowing friends that go there.

Do I stand a chance?
How important are the essays to Brown when transferring?
What can I do with this year to help my chances?
Since I’ll be applying for Junior status, would it be better to apply Spring '13, so that I have the option to be considered for Spring and Fall?
