Transfer Chances

Hi everybody,

I posted a similar message before, but now that I am in college I have a better idea of the whole situation.

Before I begin, I request you to read through the whole message. This took quite some time.

After finishing 8th grade in the US, I moved to India, where I completed 9th, 10th and 11th grades. I ended up moving back to the US to complete 12th grade.

Unfortunately, I did not know the 2 Indian Languages I had to take as classes in India.
Due to this, my GPA was greatly affected.
I had 2 B's, 2 D's and A's for the rest of my transcript.

I graduated with a unweighted GPA of 3.67 and a weighted GPA of 3.81 and I was in the top 10% with rank #15 of of 187.

I made a 26 on the ACT, and I didn't take the SAT. I would like to state here that I know I need a higher score. I have already taken the ACT thrice so I plan on taking the SAT sometime in October/November.

I chose to go to a community college as it is the largest in the state, and because of a "full load" (12 hours) tuition scholarship.

My goal is to transfer to Emory in the fall of 2013.

Here is a list of the things I did in High School:

9th Grade: 1st place in the regional science fair and 4th place in the state science fair. President of the Science Club. About 60 hours of Peer Tutoring; about 28 hours of Soup Kitchen.

10th Grade: President of the Public Speaking Team. About 60 hours of Peer Tutoring; about 28 hours of Soup Kitchen.

11th grade: About 100 hours of Peer Tutoring; about 28 hours of Soup Kitchen.

12th Grade: 1st place in the School Science Fair. 1st place in the DECA Regional competition and 2nd place in the DECA State Competition. Highest average in Pre-calculus, AP Biology, AP Macro-economics and Fundamentals of Art. Outstanding effort in AP English.
Vice President of DECA and Treasurer of Spanish Club. I was ranked as a Corporal in JROTC.

About 40 hours of Peer Tutoring, and 10 hours of Community Service. (JROTC)

College Stats (So far)

Calhoun Warhawk: Calhoun Warhawks are literally ambassadors for the college. You can read more about them if you'd like here:

Calhoun Community College | About Warhawks

I am currently taking 19 credit hours (maximum) and I'm finding it quite easy. I plan to take 18 next semester and then transfer to Emory with a "potential 37 credit hours". I say potential because I know not all of them will transfer because I am transferring from a CC after all.

1) I will do my very best to get a 4.0 gpa. Besides that, what do you think I should be aiming to get on the SAT?

2) Will Emory consider my background? (HS GPA due to relocation to India)

3) I know I only have 1 College EC. But to be a "Calhoun Warhawk" is somewhat prestigious I feel. (We represent the school)

4) I will try to do peer tutoring and I will see what else I can do for my college ECs.

Please give me your feedback. And please don't say: You have no chance of getting in with a 26 on the ACT. I know that already. Like I said, I will take the SAT.

So with everything in consideration what are my chances in transferring as a Fall 2013 student?

Thank you.

someone please!

bumpity bump bump

No one can say without an SAT score. Speculating otherwise is useless. Also, it depends so much on space available, i.e. if freshman retention is unusually high or low. So you are asking a question no one can possibly answer.

Right, but can u say at least how much I should aim for?

Suppose I do get that score, what are my chances? (provided I get a 4.0 at CC)

To make it easy on u, lets say I make the SAT equivalent of an ACT score of 30.

esai,

Haven’t you posted this question multiple times?

I believe I counted six, of which I responded to two: [College Confidential - Search Results](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?searchid=40704949)

Thank you for ur reply chazsf. I did read through the previous one and it was very helpful.

I have only posted two threads on the Emory University Thread. I also posted in “What’s my chances” and “Transfer Students”

(If you read the first sentence, which reads " I posted a similar message before, but now that I am in college I have a better idea of the whole situation")

I have new updated information(I’m in college now). That’s why I opened a new thread.

And I did contact Emory and they were able to answer my questions successfully. I just want to know my chances of getting in with my current stats if I make the SAT equivalent of a 30 on the ACT.

I am sorry, but it is a silly question. Aim for the absolute highest score you can get, of course. If you mean what do you need as a minimum to get in, no one can answer that. Again, there are other factors at play besides your stats. Coming on here and asking us to give you some kind of reassurance or prediction of what Emory will do if you accomplish X, Y and Z is truly useless.

Thank you for your answer. Of course, I am aiming for the highest possible. But there should be a score that sets the standard, right?

Someone with a 26 on the ACT like me cannot get in. Likewise, I’m looking for what I should get “at least”.

Also, you mentioned that there are other factors besides my stats.

From what I understand, Emory looks at “Stats” (HS GPA, HS EC’s, College GPA, College EC’s, Community Service), Essay, ACT/SAT score.

Am I missing anything else?

Yes, and I already mentioned it. Schools only have so much room, a class size they like to stay within. Therefore if all the freshmen were to stay, your chances are much less. If an unusually high number leave, your chances are better. Not to mention how big or small the freshman class was to start with. Completely out of your control.

Another thing you missed is recommendations, which might play a bigger role for transfer students, but I don’t really know that.

As far as some “magic minimum” SAT score, I don’t think anyone on here can give you a number based on inside knowledge. I would think a good guess is that you should at least get above the 25th percentile score Emory typically gets in their entering classes. I would think with the few slots available and the stiff competition, that would be the barest minimum. My guess is you probably need better, like the median score, but again there is no way to know. Also, of course, the better everything else on your record is, the less a somewhat poorer SAT score matters.

Honestly, if I were you I would forget about looking for this information which is marginally useful to you anyway, and spend your time focusing on your current work and doing practice tests.

Ok about recommendations, which person’s recommendation would be the most valuable?

Well I know the answer to that already I guess - It would be the Dean. But I haven’t even spoken with the Dean.

After all, it’s not like I meet the Dean on a day to day basis, so I don’t think he would know anything about me.

So does it matter who’s recommendation I get as long as the person works at the college?

I am bound to get a good recommendation from all my teachers and guidance counselor.

So does it matter?

Just someone that knows you well enough to talk about the quality of your work and your character. The important thing is that it isn’t just some rote form.

Thanks for the reply fallenchemist!

And in one of your previous posts u mentioned that I should forget about this stuff and focus on practice tests.

I agree with you completely on this point but I’m just so desperate! If I fail to get into Emory, I really don’t know where I’ll go!

esai,

An ACT 30 or SAT equivalent will put you in range, i.e. reasonable chance.

Did you decide to present yourself as a US or International student?

Okay I’m looking to Transfer and I recentely visited and talked with an admissions counselor who specificially dealt with transfer admissions. I had the same concerns as you because my SAT scores are more in the oxford range than the Emory range but she explained to me that while they do look at everything she’s never rejected someone based on HS stats if their college ones were good and that I didn’t need to worry about retaking any standardized tests.

I can’t say that this would apply to you as much because they might not take community college stats as seriously, but they would probably still look more at the fact that you’re taking a very large number of credit hours, focusing on college, and any clubs/activities you’re involved in than they would what you did in high school.

Your ACT score would be in the bottom fourth of this year’s entering Oxford class. I wasn’t sure if this implication was there from the admissions counselor, but Oxford isn’t accepting transfer applications this year.
