Transfer Chances???

Hello everyone. I know this question is totally based on the admissions board at Columbia but I was just looking for some insight and suggestions as to what you think my chances are for transferring in as a sophomore next year.

Currently, I am Chemistry and Italian double major at St. John's University.

HS gpa : 3.8
HS ECs : Musical Theatre: 3yrs
Math Team: 4yrs
Marching band: 4 yrs
Chorus : 3yrs
School newspaper :1 yr
Speech and Debate: 2 years
Soccer: 2 yrs
NHS: 2 yrs

I was nominated for the Gershwin Award my senior year which is a musical theatre award in NYC.

The only thing that I am very skeptical about is my SAT score:
1240(M+V) 1890(all together)

College gpa: 4.0 (18 credits honors program)

ECs: Cochair of Latin American Student Organization
Freshman Representative of Student government
American Chemical Society
Math club
Italian club
LEAdership developer program
Vincentian initiative to Advance Leadership
Music Ministry
School Spirit Committee
Student Services committee
And Commuter Connection Committee

Other info: I'm Hispanic, I can speak Spanish, English , and italian. I taught myself English at the age of 6. I have played saxophone for 11 years.

And that's it pretty much.

Thanks again for your insight and any suggestions.

Columbia: Reach

I know it’s a reach school, I figured as much but do you recommend retaking my SAT/ACT or do you think that a competetive application with the exception of an amazing SAT grade might suffice for a transfer student?

Definitely retake those SATs, I’m sorry to say but a 1890 is quite low and you stand very little chance of getting in with those. This is all from a high school application point of view though so they might not care as much about SATs for transfer students.

Make sure you really understand why it is that you want to come to Columbia. Our core is one of the most rigorous academic systems in the US. There’s a reason the Daily Beast ranked CU as #1 in most stressful colleges… Not to scare you away or anything but unless you were under very extreme circumstances or changed dramatically at St Johns, a 3.8 gpa and 1800 SAT won’t fare well here. Best of luck! :)

Thanks for your honest insight, I appreciate it. I do plan to retake both my act and sat to stand a better chance. Hopefully a 4.0 at St. John’s will help me out since it’s a college gpa in the honors program. I LOVE the core curriculum! I find it really intriguing and intellectually stimulating! That is actually the reason I wish to transfer. I also think I’d change my major but still be pre med so my courses won’t go to waste.
