Transfer Chances...

Well, as you can tell by the title, I want to transfer to Michigan AA. Right now I'm attending Hofstra University, and don't exactly like it here. I didn't really care much about college when I applied in high school, and when they gave me basically paid for half my tuition, I was going.

However, now I've come to a realization: I want to pursue what I enjoy and get a good education. So, since I really want to pursue both psychology and english (creative writing), I'm looking into Michigan because of the good things I've read/heard. It seems to be a good school in both respects, and definetly better than Hofstra.

Anyway, so here are my grades/etc, I want to know what my chances are and you think the school might be a good match for me.

High School Average: unweighted 87 (higher w/ APs, etc)
SATs: 1180
*However, I would be applying to Michigan for my junior year, so I'm guessing they won't weigh heavily on these grades.

College GPA: 3.84 (first semester)
-Will be at least 3.8+, probably 3.9 after this semester (with only 3 weeks left I pretty sure I'll pull off As and one -A)

ECs: I did a musical last semester, but the 20-24 hours a week killed me, so didn't do anything this semester. I'll probably do some type of magazine/newspaper thing next year and the philosophy club has interested me as well.

ECs (HS): In highschool I was forced to do 25 hours of community service to graduate, and was in track and snowboard club all 4 years, also was a cheerleader (yes, male cheerleader, lol) and in a musical my senior year. I don't really know if those things matter, but whatever.

Anyway, what are my chances? I'm hoping to keep up my 3.8+ GPA next year, so I'll just try my best.

Also, if anyone can tell me other schools that have good psychology and creative writing programs I'd be grateful. I'm just not sure what schools to try transfering to yet, but so far Michigan seems to be #1 on my list.

With a 3.8 GPA, good letters of rec. and essays, and some E.C's at Hofstra, I think you'll likely get in.

After being denied as a freshman applicant, I got in very quickly even after just one semester of college grades of 3.88 at MSU. Not sure if you really have to do any EC's unless you really want to because I had zero in college and it wasn't a problem.

Thanks for the replies.

That's good news for me. I'll just cross my fingers.

Anyway, I realize I might not NEED EC's, but I want to do them for myself really. Last semester I did that show because I thought I'd enjoy it (which I did, but it was far too time consuming). Next semester I really want to join a newspaper/magazine type club because I think it'd be something fun to do, as would some other clubs. So, it's not just for the sake of getting into a school, it's because I'll enjoy it.

Anyway, I've got a question about the screenwriting/film program they have there. I'm not sure if I should attempt a psych/screenwriting double major or go for creative writing instead. I'd personally rather just go for creative writing and take all the screenwriting courses, but I'm not sure if I could do that (especially because the screenwriting credits wouldnt count towards anything). What would you guys suggest I did if I was at Michigan? I would love to do screenwriting, although I feel that creative writing would a better, broader education that I'm more interested in getting (especially with maybe going to law school). I'm just not sure what to do with that.

Lastly, how is the school for out-of-staters? It's a big school, and far from home too (live in NY), I'm curious if I'd feel welcome and how I'd enjoy the atmosphere there.

Thanks for replies, and feel free to give me any further advice.

You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting someone from NY, so put that concern to rest.

lol, funny way to put that... but that's good to know.

Now, there is one downside to Michigan: money. :(

Considering it's roughly 35-40k tuition for someone out of state, that's a lot. I'll already owe about 30-35k after leaving Hofstra, and then two years at Michigan I'll owe 100-110k after college. So, that sorta kills the dream of goin to Michigan. I could maybe, maybe at least cut it down a bit through attempting to get outside scholarships and seeing if Hofstra will pay me more money next year (who knows if that's possible though, just an idea).

Still, unless I can get a decent amount of money out of Michigan I'll be in pretty big debt. I then plan on probably even going to law school, and after that I'll be in more debt...

So, I need to figure out something.

If I happen to get into Michigan, how are they with scholarships and stuff? What are some outside scholarships I should look into? I need some help.
