Hey everyone,

I would like some input on transferring from Iowa to Michigan, Rutgers (New Brunswick), UNC, Northwestern, University of Chicago, and MAYBE Harvard.

SAT I - 2270 (770, 760, 740)
SAT II - 760, 750, 680 on Math + Chem
GPA - 3.611
Good Extracurriculars in HS

I will be entering as a sophomore. Assuming I do well (4.0) during my first year of college, how do I fare in the transfer process? I'm worried that my high school GPA might hurt my chances...it did when I was applying as a freshman. Also, are there any other schools anyone can suggest that I consider? I'm looking for a good mix of public and private schools that I feel I would have a decent shot at getting into as a sophomore transfer.

Thanks a lot for your help!

did you apply to any of those schools for freshman admission? just wondering because some of the schools you listed seem like places you could have gotten into right out of hs with those stats.

well i only applied to northwestern out of the schools i listed and i didn't get in. are you saying that for those schools, transfer admission isn't very competitive?

by the way, i apologize for the "chances" thread. i hate them just as much as the next guy...but i had to do it.

rutgers - match
UNC OOS, Michigan OOS - slight reach
Northwestern, Chicago - a little more of a reach...if you were to apply for junior standing your chances would be far better, but to go for sophomore year chances still look pretty good.

do any of you know of public/private schools with reputable physics+astronomy departments?

MIT is pretty good, I think.

brand_182, why do you think UNC and Mich. are reaches? If he has good essays and a solid first-year GPA, it could definitely happen. I say match.

well like I said, I was referring to OOS circumstances. But if what forgiven said is true (and he got into UMich so I'm takin his word) then I revoke my previous statement.

Happy? :)

are private schools like uchicago, northwestern, and i guess ivies pretty much a reach for anyone transferring?

I know for a fact that for UNC-CH as a transfer student OOS doesn't matter at all. For that fact I'd say it's a match. They are also pretty easy to transfer into.

well these are the schools i'm looking into:

u chicago, uc berkeley, ucla, michigan, rutgers, u rochester, boston university, penn state, usc, and some ivies (don't know yet)

you stay away from chicago...

:)

haha...i guess people are always working against each other...even in the chances threads. thanks for your advice though.

lmao i'm sorry...if there's one college i'm hellbent on attending, that would be it. But, if you love it as much as I, I hope you and I are both accepted.

Hey Guys!
I need some help. I am currently a student at Emory University and am applying to transfer to UNC in fall 2007 as a sophomore. Last year, I was accepted to UNC as an in-state students. Does my prior acceptance help my chances of being admitted again? I have a 2000 on the new sat, a 4.4 gpa in high school, number 19/350 students and lots of extracurriculars. However, my first semester in college was horrendous and my GPA plummeted to a 2.7. I was only taking 3 classes though and I am bringing my GPA up this semester.I am also active in volunteering, am in a sorority, volunteer at the children's hospital, and am a member of the Pre-Med society. What do you think my chances of being accepted are? Any advice?
