Transfer chances

Hey everyone. I am currently a freshman at Villanova University in PA, enrolled in the College of Commerce and Finance there. However, after the first semester, I have concluded Villanova is not the place for me and am putting in a few transfer apps. I want a more diverse student body as well as more academic opportunties (as far as electives, etc.)

I also want to wind up graduating with a B.S. in Business Admin and I know the Univ of Michigan's Ross Bussiness School is ranked in the top 3 undergrad business programs year after year.

I went to a very competitive high school in New York State and graduated with a 3.82 GPA (UW) and in the top 15% of my class (out of 350 students). My problem is my ACT/SAT scores. I took the SAT twice and scored 620-M and 570-V both times. My ACT scores are broken down to 28-Math, 30-English, 34-Reading; 26-Science all three times I took it (isn't it frustrating to take these tests over and over again and remain the same?)

Anyway, my firsst semester in college was very successful. I came out of it with a 3.73 GPA. My grades were:

Intro to Micro -- A
Intro to Italian -- A-
Core Humanities-- A-
Legal Env of Bussiness-- A
Business Calc I -- B+ (reverse curve, I had a 94 average in this class).

Next semester, I will be taking:

Intro to Financial Accounting
Intro to Macro
Intro to MIS
English Comp
Business Calc II
Core Humanities II

I have participated in MANY activities in both high school and college, including varsity (HS) and club (college) hockey, volunteering, clubs (officer positions), etc.

I do realize I will have to apply to LSA since I am going in as a sophomore and then file an internal transfer app to Ross in my winter term of sophomore year.

What do you think my chances are of successfully transfering into U-Mich? I have filed all my forms and am just about ready to send my online app. Thanks for all your help!

You'll probably get into LSA, but competition to Ross is very competitive. You may just want to stick it out another year there and directly apply to the biz school. That way you won't get into LSA for a year and be facing the reality of having to transfer again to get your BBA if you don't make it into Ross.

Anyway, I'm looking to transfer from UM to Brown next fall. Convince the adcoms over there that they should let me in, and I'll let you have my LSA seat :)

Maize&Blue makes a good point, but your chances of getting into Ross are much better if you're already a student at U-Mich. 96% of the students admitted into Ross are current U-Mich students. I think that the remaining 4% of external transfer students admitted into Ross will be coming from really prestigious schools or will have spectacular records at other rigorous colleges. And even if you can't get admitted into Ross, majoring in economics at U-Mich is still a good route to getting a job in business.

In regards to your chances, you probably have a good shot of being accepted as long as you have good and compelling essays. Good luck.

Novastudent, your High School record is fine. You had a good GPA and a solid ACT (forget about your SAT).

Your best bet to get into the Ross school is to apply to LSA, complete a year there and then apply to the Business school. But be warned, it is difficult to get into the Business school. But as Harri said, the Econ program at Michigan is a great option.

I heard that Ross is changing to a 3-year program next year. That means you will apply at the end of your freshman year. I presume that would be true also for transfers. Could someone check to see if that is still on schedule to become effective in 2006?

Go blue! (bump)
