Transfer Chances?

I’m hoping to transfer to Brown from Oberlin College as a Junior.

College 2 semesters gpa: 3.85
ACT: 32

HS Valedictorian and Class President, though I didn’t go to a magnet school or anything of the like.

Plant to concentrate in environmental studies/ public health.
First of all, Do I have a chance?
Second of all, is it worth it to upgrade schools this late in the game and give up study abroad opportunities?

Please help!

Also, very interested in how the transfer may affect my chances at top grad schools such as UC Berkeley.

I got into Brown as a transfer from Pitzer college with a similar college/highschool record to yours. (I went to Pitzer 3 semesters and took the 4th spring semester off – so I’m transferring as a sophomore with an extra semester instead of as a junior).

Our situations seem pretty similar also– both transferring from small, fairly eccentric, liberal arts school to a larger (better) university. I haven’t started Brown yet but I think it’s definitely worth applying for a number of reasons.

1)Going abroad is not integral to the college experience despite what some undergrad intuitions say. You can go abroad anytime post graduation (just not as a student). In fact, there are many upsides to having complete freedom over your time while away.
2)If you want to transfer you are obviously regretting your decision to attend Oberlin in the first place. If you apply to Brown – even if you get rejected – you will know that you did everything in your power to get out. No nagging feeling of …. “I’m unhappy….I could have applied to transfer but didn’t” etc.
3)Transferring as a junior seems tough, no doubt, BUT Brown accepts a large number of transfers for a school of its caliber. From what I’ve heard the transfer community is a pretty strong and instant bond. Plus the New Curriculum makes it much less stressful starting anew so late.

Good luck deciding!
