Transfer Chances

I am a current sophomore student at American University in DC.
Applying school: School of Business of GWU
Term: spring 2010
College cumulative gpa: 3.13
Earned Credits from AU: 33 credits. (Current having 14 credits.)
International student
ECC: ethnic group editing chair, AU dimplomat, University College Program for 1 year (it is like 2nd honor program)
Essays: great. i explained the reason why i need to be at GWU well and i also connected the points to being in DC for 1.5 years.
Campus visit: have visited my friends up there for several times but haven't attended admission sessions.
High School Class Rank: 6/101
High school gpa: 97.6/100
High school ecc: nhs secretary 2years, math team, varsity x-country, band, 300+ hrs community service, 3 internships, and more.
AP/IB: took 3 ap classes but bombed all the ap exams.
honor rolls: tons of high honor rolls and honor rolls
SATs: not good. but GWU doesn't consider SAT scores if an applicant has more than 30 credits from another institution so I'm not posting them :(
Recommendation: from a professor at AU (great recommendation im sure)
financial status: dont need any financial aid. great status.

Do I have good chances? I applied to GWU when I was senior in my high school but I didn't get in. To be honest, I don't really understand why I didn't get in (probaby b/c of SAT scores). Also I want to ask you guys if I have any advantage because I am from a neighbor institution of GWU. (AU is a fairly good school but it's not famous as GWU is.)

Tons of thanks guys.

Since you applied before and continue to be interested in GWU, I think you have god chances. I would visit the shool though, or ask for an interview. Good Luck

I think your chances are mixed. You have good extracurriculars, however, your GPA is considerably low for an incoming transfer student. The fact that you won’t be applying for financial aid may play in your favor.

Also, I don’t think transferring from a neighboring school (American) will give you any advantage.

Your chances may also be iffy because GW accepted far too many freshman this fall which drastically reduced the schools transfer acceptance rate (I believe one of the admissions officials said they accepted under 15% of transfers this year).

Best of luck though!

As someone who was accepted to GW as a transfer student, I would have to disagree with parts of the previous posts…

Before applying, I was recommended to have at least a 3.0 GPA. Also, since you completed over 30 credits, none of your standardized tests will be taken into consideration and neither will your high school record. Academically, i’d say you are fine.

That said, I did apply for Fall 2009, but was bumped to spring 2010, since their fall 2009 transfer class was over-subscribed. Just make sure you make it clear in your essay why you want to go, versus American. You dont want to transfer all over again. Personally, I said I was looking for a larger school, more research opportunities, and unparalleled internship opps (considering its only a few blocks from the white house!)

Good Luck!

I, too, am a transfer student; I’m currently emerged in my first semester here at GWU. This year GWU’s transfer acceptance was very slim, as mentioned above. As someone who knows lots of transfers and took part in transfer colonial inauguration, I’ve heard of no one with a GPA of just above a 3.0. To be a competitive applicant, I was told that around a 3.5 is adequate, though it’s obviously not impossible to get in with a lower GPA.

Take advantage of your current semester at American University and try to get your GPA up. If you can, I say your chances are excellent.
