TRansfer competition - Sophomore v. Junior year

Hey CC

I looked around but did not see a thread addressing this specifically.

D is considering transfer options and looking at various schools. Curious how admissions is for students applying to transfer in for Junior year (as opposed to the more common transfer in for Sophomore year). More or less competitive?

Thanks for the input,

Where is she transferring from?

What places are on her list to apply to to transfer into?

Why does she want or need to transfer?

It really depends on the school whether there are more soph or jr transfers. For instance, UCs only accept jr transfers, while some selective privates likely (I have never seen any data) accept more sophs so that the students are on campus longer (eg. Princeton doesn’t accept any transfers as they want students all 4 yrs).

In addition to a lack of data on the number of soph vs jr transfers accepted for schools that take both, I’ve never seen acceptance rates for soph vs jr transfers eiher.

She is a sophomore at Wellesley College. She has done very well there academically and Wellelsey has much to offer but she has yet to find her fit in the culture of the school. She is also looking at study abroad options for her Junior year (in which case she would not transfer).

She is looking at similarly competitive LAC’s, but she is also looking at larger colleges/university’s (something she did not want to do when applying as a freshmen but is now more open to). She is focused on Economics as a major study area.

The transfer rates for top colleges are daunting but with out more data it is really hard to tell how strong the applicant pool is.

Two more options to consider would be a domestic junior year as a guest student at one or the larger universities she has been thinking about, or just taking a year off while she works through the transfer-or-not thought process.
