Hello everyone, I will have around a 3.5 by the end of this semester. I have a lot of extra curricular, and I will have a strong essay. Do you think I will have a chance in transferring as a CS major ?

Any tips and ideas that you might also wanna share with someone who is planning to transfer are also welcome.

CS is a very competitive major. I am also applying as a CS transfer.

How many credit hours will you have when trying to transfer? Do you meet the prerequisites for CS? Are you in-state? All of these will have an effect on your chance of admission.

My GPA is currently at a 3.94. Hopefully after this semester it will be closer to 3.95 or 3.96.

But anyway, I’d say you have a chance. I’m not sure what the average GPA for transfer is, but I’m sure it is higher than the minimum requirements. Also, keep in mind you need to have at least 60 hours at UIUC to graduate.

I attended the transfer visit day on saturday. The advisor representing engineering said that 95% of the decision for transfer students is the GPA in the courses listed in the transfer handbook. Extra curricular and essay more important for borderline decisions.

He also stated that the 3.0 GPA listed in the transfer handbook is the most common GPA of students admitted to engineering. Some people are admitted with a lower GPA but it is rare. Mechanical and aerospace need to have a 3.5 or 3.6 to be competitive, and he told my friend that she would have virtually no chance to be accepted to Mechanical with a 3.2.

One last thing he mentioned, that I’ve not seen elsewhere, is that the transcript needs to show a consistant pattern in taking technical courses. If you spread out all the Calculus, Physics and Chemistry courses so that you only had one course every semester that would go against you, even if you have a 4.0 GPA. You wouldn’t necessarily be denied, but you should explain it in the essay.

ps: I am applying for spring transfer to Computer Engineering with a 4.0 GPA.

Alright so I called and spoke to the Dean today. He said that most programs require a little bit more than the minimum required gpa. And like you said Mechanical and Aerospace are competitive so you will need a higher GPA.

Thanks everyone for your input ! I appreciate your help !
