So I’m having trouble understanding how the transfer course requirements work for the College of Arts and Sciences. I have read the full requirements thoroughly and even looked at the transfer blog but I am left with this question:
Say that for the Social Sciences requirement I already have it completed through AP credit (As in, I already got credit at my current university for economics due to the AP macroeconomic exam and AP microeconomics exam, and the courses that I got credit for at my university for economics also transfer successfully to UVA. Furthermore, the scores I got also successfully count for the same courses here at UVA as the transfer courses do). Does this mean that I already satisfied the Social Science requirement indefinitely, or because it was AP credit it doesn’t count?
I ask this because on the transfer site it says that no more than 60 credits transfer, and I already completed about 24 credits worth of courses at my university from AP exams, plus the 14 credits from my first semester. By the end of fourth semester I would have completed about 85 credits in total, but only 60 of them will transfer. Therefore I am skeptical about my AP credits counting towards completing the transfer requirements. Furthermore, my AP credits already completed the foreign language, and part of the humanities requirements, so it’s just not an issue of one section of the requirements.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Really a question for the admissions office. My son received credit for AP econ at a previous institution but had to retake it at UVA bc he did not receive a 4. I believe you will still need 60 UVA credits to graduate but you should really call or email them. Did you check the AP scores for all your classes in question.
It is my understanding that you will only get transfer credit for courses actually taken at your current University (provided UVA has a corresponding course, and you got a C or better, though some programs may require a B or better for certain courses) for area requirements. While UVA does give credit by AP exam (for example, the Micro and Macro Econs - depending on your scores), it does seem that in order for you to meet the area requirements, “courses must be taken for credit and for a grade”. This leads me to believe that while you WILL the get credit hours for those APs, they WON’T count towards meeting the area requirement. However, the additional Econ class you took at your current college should count, and depending on the other classes you have taken, you may very well have already met the Social Science requirement. Note that to meet this requirement, it is a total of 6 hours from two different departments. This page has more info on all requirements (includes foreign language info too):

And here is a credit analyzer tool that may help to see if your courses may transfer:

You will want to verify all of this with UVA though as I could be wrong. But, yes, either way, the maximum is 60. The registrar won’t review your transcript until after you are admitted, but someone there should be able to answer a general question. I do know that after you transcript is reviewed, you will be able to see and verify everything on line and can tell what you have and what you need.
@Collegehelp4us
I see. Did UVA, however, consider the social sciences part of his transfer requirements completed?
My problem is that whether or not my AP credits will count towards the transfer requirements, since I really do not want to retake, for example, an Econ course. Plus because of my AP credit and dual enrollment courses in high school, I already completed my college’s full English course, which is a UVA transfer requirement, so if AP credits don’t count, does that mean I have to take my college’s full English course all over again?
The English is tricky bc they are more strict on that unless you are coming
from VA community college. They do allow you to submit an appeal form. You really should calll and speak to someone or email with your questions. And again if your Ap score isn’t what they require yes you will have to repeat the class. That’s at least what my son had to do for Econ though I believe he received random elective credit for the ap course.
Everyone my kid knows who transferred had to take at least one of the English courses at UVA (and they weren’t happy being with 1st years as 3rd years). If you have enough Econ credits without considering the AP credits you’ll probably be fine in that regard. But you will have to complete the requisite amount of credits taken at UVA so anywhere you got ahead before will really just mean you’ll need more elective classes of some kind to get enough UVA hours once they give you credit for AP tests and transfer classes.
