Transfer Credit Dilemma

I'm a film major, and i absolutely -hate- the film program at my current school. I want to write movies and tv shows, but the school doesn't offer a single screenwriting class. A fact i wish i knew earlier. Anyway, i'm currently trying to transfer to another film school that'll fit me better, but their transfer credit policy says "Transfer courses must be similar in content to those offered at our school". I checked the course catalog of my new school, and only three classes seem to have equivalents there. I'm worried that my old classes (About 30 credits, most of it required for the major) may not transfer because the content is kind of similar but not equivalent. Has anyone else run into this? I don't want to lose 4 semesters of work!

Colleges and universities have access to national databases indicating course equivalency, so things may not be as grim as they look right now. Get in touch with the place that you would like to transfer to, and ask if they can give you a pre-read on your credits. Some will do this.

Do organize every last bit of evidence you have for each of the classes that you have taken so that you can petition for review once you are admitted. It is entirely possible that while your old course A has no one-to-one equivalent at the new place, your old A, B, and C together cover the same material that the new place covers in their D, E, and F.

Don’t try to figure this out yourself. The college you wish to apply to will do it for you. Afterall, if you are admitted they will have to do in order for you to get credit. Comparing the dialog in catalogs is of little use. Catalogs are marketing tools and there are many ways to describe the same thing. You will likely be surprised. Maybe some classes will wind up being transferred as electives rather than core but you need electives too.

Good luck.
