I am an international student currently enrolled at Utica College, NY. My GPA is 3.78 at the moment and I want to transfer to an engineering school. SUNY Buffalo is one of my choice.

I know that they have a thing call TAURUS to calculate transferable credits, but i found most of my courses in Utica College courses have something like this MAT***, does anyone know that it would be transferable or not?

Also I heard from one of my friends that she got accepted to SUNY at Buffalo as an international transfer (from Kuztown University) as well, but she said that her credits were not transfered and she couldn't even take her major courses (business i think) and has to study general education courses at the moment. Has anyone heard of this before? I am worried as I will have two years worth of credits ( roughly 60) by the time i transfer and it would be bad if they don't accept it.

My son had me on the TAURUS site to see about taking summer classes locally that will transfer. It is way to confusing.

Buffalo is quite generous in giving credit for AP classes but I don’t know about transfers. I’d suggest calling the school for help. Try admissions first. Son is in engineering but is a freshman. I know there are so many required courses for engineering that the 45 credits he entered with this year will really not count for much other than early registration.

My daughter, also a freshman, had college courses that transferred as ECO, HIS, etc. They said they will count toward elective requirements, but not toward her major (luckily none of them applied to her major). There are some Utica College math classes which have actual course equivalencies (my D has also had me searching Taurus and the local schools for summer courses). For example, Utica’s MAT 201 and 202 = UB’s Calculus I & II (MTH 141 AND 142). My guess is that more of your gen ed classes will transfer than core requirements though. Can you plan your spring schedule so that most/all of your credits will transfer?

sk8rmom-
If you have free time I’ll give you the courses my son wants to take the school he wants to take them at and you can figure it out for me. I am lost on TAURUS. Hopefully my son is having a better time of it. Actually, he is going to speak to an advisor to get some info on this.

crazed, i’d be happy to help as I finally got the ins and outs of TAURUS…send me a PM if you’d like. The only problem I’m running into is most colleges haven’t posted their summer courses yet, but at least I have the course numbers that will transfer and can get an idea of what they offered last summer. Strange that UB doesn’t offer many summer classes - she had hoped to just do online ones but very few were offered last summer that she needs.

thank you sk8rmom for your info. And yes, im planning to take courses that hopefully will be transfered during the spring semester. I contacted the admission, and they said they only know when i get accepted and sit down with an advisor to see if the courses taken would be transfered.

Oh, I dont exactly understand “more of your gen ed classes will transfer than core requirements though”. Can you help me understand more?

SUNY has general education course requirements - it’s systemwide. You can find them on UB’s website or google SUNY Gen Ed. They include English/writing (6 credits), humanities/language, math, science, art, and maybe more but that’s all I remember. Anyway, when I was on Taurus doing a course equivalency search for Utica College (in reverse, since my D is a UB student but Utica is closer to home for summer classes) I noticed that they had more direct course articulation (it transferred as a particular UB course not a XXX**) among the gen ed classes. For example, UC’s ENG 102 = UB’s ENG 201 (which is a very good thing, as it exempts the UB student from taking an additional humanities class). You can go to the Taurus website and get a pretty good idea - do an “equivalency by school” search and then choose the departments you have taken courses from. I’m sure they will further evaluate your transcript if you have any courses that aren’t listed on Taurus yet. Good luck!

Btw, I would not wait til the promised meeting with the advisor and recommend you do as much as you can yourself. Being proactive is a most useful skill at UB!

Thank you for clearing that up for me sk8rmom. And yes, i did look over taurus and looked at all the courses i have taken so far in Utica College. Except for some math, english and chemistry classes, all the other classes are in the form of XXX***. I guess i will send an email to the school of engineering to ask for more specific details about the courses.

I appreciate your comments and suggestions. I will sure be as proactive as possible, only way an international could achieve his dreams in a foreign country :). I will bother you later if anything comes up :D

Good luck and it’s no bother at all. Oh, regarding your friend who had to take gen ed classes before her major classes, that is not the way all programs work at UB. It must be something specific to the Business School as my daughter is taking mainly her major-related courses and will average one gen ed class per semester. Maybe crazed will comment on how the engineering program works there…
