I am an undergraduate at the Univeristy of Pittsburgh. I currently have a 4.0, but I am thinking about transfering to Rutgers University. Rutgers will not factor my GPA from Pitt into their Rutgers' GPA. When applying to graduate schools, will they calculate my previous grades into my GPA, or am I wasting all of the grades I have received thus far?

Yeah, they'll take into account your scores at Pitt.

Out of curiosity, why are you transferring? I'm a Pitt alum.

"When applying to graduate schools, will they calculate my previous grades into my GPA"

No, they will not combine/average your GPAs from different institutions. However they will take into account of your old GPA like what ophiolite said.

Mostly location

I am majoring in Molecular Biology, and if I transferred to Rutgers I'd be able to get a paid research position over the summer because of its proximity to home. With my current situation at home I would be unable to spend a summer at Pittsburgh doing research. I have already talked to a few Professors and they all have said the best experience is summer researching, and that nothing else compares to it because of the amount of time you can devote to it. I feel that if I transfer I will be able to work in a lab year round rather than just off and on switching projects each year. In addition New Jersey is a hot spot for pharmaceutical companies that I might have the chance to work for.
