Transfer Double Major

If I'm looking to transfer from a community college to a 4 year college as a double major in political science-international relations, and as a studio art major is that possible, and should i take both the poli sci and art classes required to transfer?

This really depends on the school. Some schools allow transfer students to double major others don’t. You should have some idea where you want to transfer pretty early in your community college career. Once you have made your list contact the schools individually and ask them if you can double major. Then make your decision on your schedule based on that information.

I wanted to double major and found that I couldn’t without basically taking two extra years of college, which defeated the purpose of community college. I would wonder why you would major in two completely unrelated fields?

I agree with ThatPoshGirl, that the possibility of double majoring depends on the individual school. Some schools don’t permit double majoring at all. Double majoring may not work at other schools if there are a lot of required courses. If you aren’t in a situation where there is a guaranteed credit transfer, you may not know if you have space in your schedule to double major until after you get admitted.

I think it’s a good idea to explore your majors now, but you probably don’t want to take all poli sci and art classes. You might want to take a math and a writing composition class to get them out of the way. You should also investigate if you can take any required classes of your possible four year school(s) at your cc.

My son transferred and had to drop one of his majors as he was a double major in his first school. Like Twisted, he would have had to take at least an extra year or two to meet all the requirements and he decided to drop one of his majors. It definitely needs good planning with the school you are transferring to to work.
