Transfer (Engineering)

I read this comment from a UIUC admissions officer on one of his blogs:

Someone asked him about acceptance percentages for transfer admission into the College of Engineering. This is what he replied:

"I cannot give you a percentage. However, I can tell you that if you have the qualifications listed in the Transfer Handbook, you are in very good shape for transfer admission. The majority of majors at Illinois are able to accept all applicants who meet the requirements–it’s really not a matter of taking the top only or working within quotas.
With Engineering, if you meet the requirements, feel confident. If you are not quite at the level indicated, you should most certainly still apply–there is still a chance you will be accepted."

I thought it was really hard to get into UIUC's engineering, considering its one of the top ranked in the country. Does anyone personally know someone that transferred into the Engineering school? What were their stats? Were they Out-of-state students?

Admission rates for transfer into junior year engineering have usually been in the 60% range, which is higher than any other college at UIUC. Transfer into junior year is the highly preferred year and if you try to transfer earlier, your chances are significantly lower. Also, UIUC favors in-state for transfers (does not do so for freshman applicants). The minimum requirements themselves do not make it "easy" to transfer. You have to complete required courses and have a fairly high GPA, which can change from year to year. Usually a 3.0 at a minimum (both overall and separately in science/math courses), higher for some majors, e.g., there have been years when transfer into electrical or computer engineering or computer science have had minimums as high as 3.5. Ultimately, ability to transfer even if you have minimum depends on seats available and for engineering there tend to be many available junior year.

i transferred to uiuc for EE, which is one of the more competitive engineering programs here. I had a 3.2~3.4 from my community college, had 2 C's but the rest were A's and B's (70 hours transferred). so it worked out.

my friend transferred to ME, even harder to get into than EE, he had tons of extracurriculars and stuff. he also had 2 C's, albeit not in math or physics classes

if u want to do mechanical engineering, dont apply under mechanical engineering; apply under 'engineering mechanics'; it is essentially the same degree, just with different professors (the theoretical and applied mechanics department was merged with mechanical engineering, but they kept the degree available)

Are you and your friend in-state? I am an out-of-state applicant with sophomore standing even though I have nearly all the courses to be a junior. GPA is 3.7 I am not sure about my chances but I'll just hope for the best :)

I am in state, but at the transfer orientation there were some guys from Michigan here. Also, I have some friends who got in as freshman and they are from other states (New York and South Carolina)

What engineering discipline do you plan on applying under? this will make a difference

This is meant to inspire those who want to go to u of I engineering but don’t have the stats in high school:

I had a 3.4 unweighed GPA and a 25 act in high school. my weighed GPA was 4.1 out of (4.7?). I took all the AP and honors courses I could take. I took AP calculus ab, AP chemistry, honors physics, honors biology, AP English language, AP literature, AP micro economics, AP us history.

To sum things up, I had a 25 act and 3.4 unweighed GPA. I got rejected from UIUC engineering. I went to a community college for 3 semesters, got a 3.9 GPA and took courses like calc 2/3 diff equ chemistry etc. I got accepted as a transfer.

In high school I had a 25 act, and a 3.4 unweighed gpa and I got in to computer engineering at u of I. Work hard in college and transfer in if your high school credentials are mediocre.

Did you have EVERY required course done when you applied as a a junior? I am looking to transfer but I will be missing a few TAM courses and one physics couse. Also I’ll have about a 3.9 gpa
