I'm considering transferring, but the 'Why Transfer' essay has me lost. Are the criteria for this essay similar to the original college-entrance essays?

In other words, I know that I have to know specific things about the program of the school I want to transfer to, not diss the school i'm transferring from, etc., but are those things supposed to be rattled off dryly like factoids? Or do the 'creativity' criteria kick in here as well?

I mean, if anyone successful in transfer has a summarized example of their essay or anything they could send me, that would be such a great help. I don't do plagiarism because that's just silly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yeah i'm also confused about that. i actually just finished writing mine, but it's really just me being like these are the reasons, blah blah. i feel i have good reasons, but the essay isnt what you would call entertaining. is that right?

I just erased an entire post. Oh well, it wasn't that important.
I found some helpful links, guys. Good stuff out there. Googling 'transfer how to write why essays' yields lots.

This is from an actual admissions officer, I should think. Worth many good long reads. Specific, focused, a bit biased perhaps - but experienced and helpful nonetheless.

No prob, just organizing some nice finds. ;)

btw, it's cool that transfers can get together like this. How are you all gonna write your essays (how have you written them, if you're done already like milkdud?) Why do you want to transfer, and what schools are you looking into?

I have got no idea how to write my essay, because I can't figure out a way to do it without dissing my current school.

Well, I want to transfer because you would have to be insane not to. My school is a newly sprung up college program within an amazingly wonderful university. This college is hopelessly retarded, and that's an understatement. It has a very warped perspective of the future and its attitude towards education is abysmal. What's worst, we're surrounded by these miraculously abundant resources that we are not allowed at all to partake of. I've forgotten more things than I've learned here - although some of the professors have been awesome.

Gag, so that was my rant. I have to figure out a nice impartial way to show my frustration.

I want to transfer to either Yale (for the faculty of its philosophy and literature, and also because of their lenient policies towards internationals) or Columbia or Cornell or Brown (but Brown is hecka expensive.) If I don't get accepted, oh I don't know, I'll just drop out and take the national law exam or something. Maybe I'll try Mount Holyoke, where some of my best friends are. I dunno. I'm really at a loss. Hope you guys are more focused than I am.

khebnami, you should really try and get some safeties onto your list if you're really that miserable at your current school. what are you interested in? i can try and give you some safety suggestions. and i just really wrote out my reasons while trying not to diss my current school (it was hard). i went for the, students are not as motivated as me approach. and i want a more creative liberal arts education. i just tried to say i wanted something different, as opposed to i wanted something better. but thanks for all the links! its really helpful. just make sure you have valid reasons, and dont rant too much about your old school. talk more about what you want in the new school.

i don't know about the rest of you, but my apps aren't due until the spring. so... i suppose i will take a good amount of time over winter break writing my essays. don't let the transfer apps interfere with your studies and don't start panicking now about writing essays if they're not due until the spring! we have plenty of time!

ps: this thread and all of the links are amazing! thanks a bunch

@khebnami - why don't you try for places like michigan which are hard to get into but easier when compared to ivies. michigan has an excellent faculty and the environment for internationals is great.

Yeah, MissFiskeGuide you're definitely right, my apps mostly aren't due until March 1st either and I have an exam tomorrow. I should pull myself together :D

milkdud, that'd be great. I guess I do need safeties, but I'm careful to select them - I mean, if I don't get into a need-blind school that offers education worth crossing the pacific for, then that's just sad, isn't it - but Michigan sounds good, anshumanrulz! Only... it's that hard to get into. But my first choice is Yale, so I shouldn't say these things. :) Maybe I should consider liberal arts schools like Vassar or... Mount Holyoke. I'm thinking of adding UW too, in Washington state, just because I lived there when I was seven.

I'm not sure what to look for in a college; all I know is that I want OUT of my parents' house and this crappy school INTO a stimulating academic environment. Of any sort. God help me. I wish colleges in France opened more slots for international transfers.

Honestly, I just based my ramshackle list largely on schools my good high school friends have gone to. I'm a real loser that way.. ;) Thanks for all the positive feedback.
