Transfer F/A?

Must you reapply for loans/FA if you transfer schools midyear? What if the newer school costs more?

Yes, you need to reapply.

If the school costs more than that can be a problem since most transfer students don’t get much aid.

Don’t cut your ties with your current school until you see the aid package at your new school. You may not be able to afford your new school.

What if I was already approved for both schools back in August?

You still need to reapply.

The aid that this other school might have awarded you may have been given away to other students since you didn’t attend there.

Are you a frosh?

Yes, freshman. What about student and parent loans?

You can still get student and parent loans, but if you were offered any grants or scholarships, you might not get those as a transfer student.

What was in your original aid pkg from this school?

Are your parents willing to pay more if you transfer?

Originally offered about $10K/semester from LAC, none from instate State school. Parents pay more? Maybe

contact the new school’s FA office. Since your new school didn’t give you anything but loans the first time you applied (but didn’t attend), find out what they need from you.

Why are you leaving your LAC after one semester?

Sorry. No, want to go to LAC that offered $10K

There’s a good chance that the LAC isn’t going to give you that $20k if you transfer. Schools offer that money to incoming frosh to get the best incoming frosh class because that affects their rankings.

It sounds like the LAC costs more PLUS you probably won’t get the $20k. You need to contact the LAC to find out what they’ll do. If your parents won’t pay the additional money, you may not be able to transfer.

Why didn’t you go to the LAC in the first place.

Keep in mind that when you get your Spring offer, it might be misleading because it will only be for one semester.

I think the OP is the parent- but sure seems like a lot of freshman mid year transfers lately.

It’s complicated and involved athletics, thought I chose the best fit. I may have the help of a “rabbi” at this LAC for the FA.

I thought the LAC was Catholic?

LOL,
“rabbi” is a generic term for protector, influential guardian, a Don Corleone if you will

So, you have someone who will pay the $70,000 that it will cost you at this second school?

No, someone who has influence in the school and it’s decision makers.

Still, although the school made one offer to your son as an entering freshman, there is no guarantee that the offer would stand for a transfer- particularly mid year.

If the LAC meets full need, you would still get the same amount. If it doesn’t, there is no guarantee.

Manhattan college for instance meets full need of 15% of applicants.
Average % of need met is 67% ( & it looks like most of that is self-help- loans/workstudy- average grant is $9,217)
Average student debt upon graduation ( not counting parental debt) $31,912.
COA $40,315.

I know, nothing is ever guaranteed. Just wasn’t sure of the loan issue, if we had to reapply for that again.
Funny, when we applied last spring, it allowed you to enter 2 different schools.
