Transfer: Failed CC Course

I am going to be a sophomore at UCD and got a D for a summer course at a CC due to personal issues. If I retook it (online) during this fall quarter and got a better grade, both the D and the new grade will be there, correct? The new grade will not replace the old one, I was told, but my GPA will be better. I am trying to transfer to another UC for my junior year and I just wanted to get my GPA up to increase my chances. Should I retake this course during my fall quarter?

Actually I just checked and the CC I took it at allows the grade to be replaced. So I will be taking it in the fall. However, when I am applying for UC transfer, I will have to submit it by November I believe. So I will be submitting my failing grade since I won’t even be finished with the class I’m taking.

Actually, I think the grades for students who are enrolled full time at UC/CSU universities who take CC courses during the summer do not transfer and are not counted in your GPA, you just get credit for the course, which in your case will depend on whether the course was a part of or prerequisite for your major since a D is a passing grade but can not be used to fulfill a requirement or prerequisite.

However, when you apply to transfer to another UC you have to provide a transcript from the CC that you earned the D at and I am unsure whether they will use it to recalculate your GPA. Either way, getting a D at a CC is not going to be very impressive and you should be ready to explain it without sounding like you are making excuses.
