Transfer Fall 2010

@bwaybabe: I am actually not sure what my major is right now - I’m in the bfa acting program at brooklyn but i am trying to steer clear of programs like that which are stifling - something related to theatre music or english ish

Either way I’m really happy for your Skidmore, Smith, and Mt. Holyoke acceptances girls. Just see that worse comes to worst not all is lost. I really do hope that if Barnard is your first choice that you get off the waitlist! I just rechecked last year’s thread and the girl who got off the waitlist quickly actually got off it in a week!! Make Monday your deadline for sending them a letter, ok? And if anything, if you’re in the city please make a trip there on Monday, maybe it’ll help a lot. @lioninwinter, update us when you’ve sent in a confirmation and deposit if you’re going! Maybe we can keep count of future classmates.

I really hope I get in next week, I officially have no mail from Barnard from this week. Barnard is my only choice and hope (Although I sent rushed applications to 3 other schools because of paranoia… Being international I really don’t want to stress out my parents anymore by moving out of state again and replacing all visa documents and everything - it’s too much. Barnard would be most practical, I’d just move uptown.), and I’ve demonstrated my devotion to them since before. In fact although I think my essay last year was so compelling, in a way the essay I wrote this year doesn’t deviate that much from the strength of the one from last year, and I was able to put in very personalized input from sitting in classes and talking to professors at Barnard. I hope the recs will count, because the professors at Parsons have been so very supportive beyond belief.

Ha let’s keep one another going! :)

pauladanielle- one of my best friends is at hofstra’s BFA acting program and she’s literally losing her mind. I specifically chose not to attend BFA programs (though I was accepted to a few, as well as NYU tisch’s BA Acting program) simply BECAUSE those programs can be so stifling and I like to think of myself as a more cosmopolitan member of society, who is proficient in more than one skill. So I’m totally with you there. It’s nice to see another actress out there!

thewoman- thanks so much for your support. I’m going to call on monday and see what I can do, and email them a letter as well as stop by on Tuesday to demonstrate my devotion. I’m HOPING that some people will immediately decline so the waitlist starts moving, but they said that if they have room, they review all of the waitlist-ers again. The list isn’t ranked, so we’re all in the same boat and will be compared to one another all over agan. It kind of sucks. I hope you get good news next week!

“I specifically chose not to attend BFA programs (though I was accepted to a few, as well as NYU tisch’s BA Acting program) simply BECAUSE those programs can be so stifling and I like to think of myself as a more cosmopolitan member of society, who is proficient in more than one skill. So I’m totally with you there.” <– I totally agree. I thought the fact that Parsons’ architecture is a BFA and not a B.Arch. provides students with a more liberal arts approach. What was I thinking?! We were handed out schedules with classes strictly chosen by the program director, and we can’t switch or change anything because they apparently"worked it out in a way that there is gender balance and a good mix of people who are friends and are not." UM, WHAT?! I wish I was able to include that in my Barnard essay - I only got the class schedule and stuff two weeks ago.

Also, I know :frowning: Sucks to go through another review process. I really hope every one of us gets what she both desires and deserves. I think we’ve all worked hard for and love Barnard in our own ways. Thanks for the well wishes! I’m definitely still following this thread and will hopefully update with good news next week. Goodluck with the call on Monday! I hope they respond with something comprehensive so you can come up with specific reasons.

At least for those of us on the waitlist we’ll have an answer by June.

Yeah absolutely. I’m so glad you guys are understanding about the BFA thing I have been losing my mind trying to explain it to people in my program when they’re reaction is more like “you will never get a job when you graduate without a BFA” and stupid things that they’ve been brainwashed to think. My voice teacher sang at the MET for ten years and she got her masters in criminal psychology lmao. It always pays to have the opportunity to explore all of your interests!

Also, I have to say that you ladies are all so supportive. And it’s funny because people say that Barnard is really disconnected bc it’s a city school and that’s why I was so skeptical in applying (because that was why I was transferring OUT of the city school I go to), but the type of people I have met all seem so concerned with everyone else and it makes me so hopeful that everyone who wants to go gets a chance to because it seems like such a great place to be :)

My friend just found out she was rejected. :frowning: I’m nervousssss.

anybody else on the waitlist wanna post stats? or people who were accepted too?

just morbid curiosity. ;)

transfer 91

Sure. Here’s mine:

College GPA: 3.5
HS GPA: A- ish? I graduated from Stuyvesant H.S. in nyc so i remember not having a really great average due to all the competition
ACT: 28
Ethnicity: Asian American (my parents are from Bangladesh)

Extracurriculars
College (Mount Holyoke)- Student Conference Committee (SGA), Planning and Budget Advisory Board (SGA), Honor Code Council, English Department Student Board

High School- National Honors Society, American Cancer Society, Stuyvesant Spectator: Assistant Editor to Op-Ed, Model UN

Work Experience:
Girl Scouts of the USA, research intern
Salfarlie, Salfarlie &Associates, legal intern
Peer2Peer Tutors, Inc. tutor
HousingWorks Bookstore Cafe, volunteer
Queens Hospital Center, volunteer

Essays: For the supplements, I wrote about how I feel that Barnard is right for me because of my variety of academic interests, the resources I would take advantage of being apart of Columbia and NYC, and the strong support I would get being a pre-law student at Barnard in getting internships, career advice, help with law school apps, etc.

Extras: In addition to the wonderful recommendation my French professor wrote me, I had my boss from Girl Scouts write me a recommendation as well. I also sent in a copy of the brochure that I wrote for Girl Scouts last summer.
I sent in a letter to the admissions office telling them about the major I want to pursue at Barnard (Economics and Social History-special major) and how I could only pursue that major if I were to be accepted at Barnard since I couldn’t do that at Mt. Holyoke

sigh. I dont know what else there is to do but wait at this point

I know hhaha same here just plain curiosity. Also @meppie your friend from Lang too? Did she find out from home? :frowning: that’s unfortunate, really. :frowning: I really hope it’s still the same acceptance rate as it’s been through the past years. @PaulaDanielle yeah Barnard girls are really really sweet and the sense of sisterhood is definitely there. And we can already see a supportive bunch in this thread so I’m sure they attract the same type of people. Haha at Parsons kids are so cutthroat they treat the school like reality TV, and there have been instances of fights that have led to sabotaging of school projects :frowning: ahhh there’s like, no sense of family at all. It constantly depresses me.

@Thewoman, yes my friend goes to Lang. She already got into NYU Gallatin (her first choice) so that wasn’t too bad of news, her stats weren’t great though either- she had already transferred mid semester here from Emerson 3.7 GPA and had a shotty h.s. record, hah much like me!

Hoping Barnard appreciates my improvement/activity since I’ve been at college. Won’t know til later this week I guess. :/

Gotcha… Well that’s okay then especially if Gallatin is her first choice! When did she hear back from NYU? I applied to Gallatin too last year but got rejected, with a school as big as NYU you definitely need a decent GPA for them to at least look at you. I applied to NYU CAS this year for their Urban Studies and Architecture program under art history just in case… At the NYU transfer thread there’s practically no one else doing that major so hopefully that helps too, since a lot of them are in CAS Econ if they aren’t shooting for Stern. But for some reason I still feel like I have a better chance at Barnard because they strongly took (and hopefully still are taking) my interest, among others, into account. When do you find out about BC?

This all means the first batch is definitely over and we’re not hearing back til at least the 13th/14th+? I am freaking out. Two finals right now too. Good luck ladies. Hopefully the second batch has good news.

I have my fingers crossed for all you girls who haven’t heard yet!

Thanks everyone ^. @Thewoman she heard back weeeeks ago, only because she originally applied for transfer btw semesters (although you cant transfer midyear freshman year at NYU), therefore they just pushed it off until the Spring. But they already had all of her info way early. I’d say your chances are good, being such a big school means they take more transfer students. Best of luck though.

As for BC…any day now. Although I think I was rejected because these elusive “tabs” offering enrollment payment options doesn’t pop up on my Agora account. Despite claiming not to release decisions via internet, BC has done this in past years and it usually indicates you got in. It’s kind of a sucky, unofficial way to find out. There’s always the chance that they haven’t updated the site yet for all, but I’m not holding out much hope.

@meppie Agh okay goodluck with BC too! Is it only Barnard and BC for you? Also, so you meant she found out weeks ago from… Gallatin, correct? She submitted her app early for them this semester or she tried sending her app for Spring admission? And she found out about Barnard together with the 1st batch? Hahah sorry I’m so confused.

Thanks so much NerdyGirl! So far majority of this thread will potentially be hearing back this week. @GD2008 I’m not sure if we’ll hear back today or tomorrow just because they probably meant to do the May 12th mailing to see if they can get any immediate deposits from accepted people and to find out how many people accept a spot on the waiting list… So yeah I guess the 13th/14th? GULP

Goodluck to us, ladies!!

@TheWoman She tried to apply for this past spring semester, but NYU doesn’t take freshman this year therefore her app was saved to be looked at for a Fall 2010 transfer. Sorry for being unclear. And yes, I’m assuming she was one that found out in the first wave of decisions seeing as the letter was received on Saturday.

By this year* I mean between semesters (for freshman). Wow, I need sleep.

I just heard back today… and was rejected. I am really depressed right now. There’s nowhere else that I want to go, and I think I will take a year off from school and then reapply. Out of high school, I was waitlisted by Barnard, and then last year they flat out rejected me but Columbia waitlisted me. I go to USC right now and I seriously can’t go back to school here. Taking a year off is seriously scary and I don’t even know if they’ll accept me by next year… sigh… best of luck, ladies.

P.S. I applied to Welseyan and Fordham too but I no longer have much interest for either. Fordham also dropped off the face of the earth. I was under the impression they were rolling and thus decisions were rolling however no one has heard back! Hah, I submitted my application March 15th. Fordham was a safety anyway but if it came down to going to Fordham vs. staying here, I’m pretty sure I’d stay here.
