1000bpm-I just wrote a letter about how committed I am to Barnard and introduced a new aspect of myself that I didn’t touch on in my application- my plans to start an anti-bullying awareness campaign. Cornell is an amazing school (I have a friend who goes there and loves it) but I can understand why you’d want Barnard…write the letter, and give it a few days. The list does have movement, so fear not!

to those who were rejected, I’m really sorry. I hope you guys find happiness where you end up.

I’m sorry peacelovensarah :-(, and PaulaDanielle and 1000Bpm don’t give up yet! just make sure they know that if you get in you will go.

Hi guys, just found out a couple days ago that I got into Barnard for transfer into fall 2010. I’d love to get in touch with any of the other ladies who are going. I haven’t decided to go there yet but I leaning that way…
Anyways, maybe we could talk on facebook or something
My biggest worry about Barnard is that I wont fit in. I mean I am very academically savvy, but I also like to party and have fun… I am just worried that other people at Barnard are not like that. I not a hipster or fashionista either, I have a lot of friends who are but I’m transferring from Sarah Lawrence which was overwhelmingly like that so im just a little confused… haha.

danarobb- I don’t see why being academically savvy and not having fun are synonymous lol. I can only speak for myself, but I like to have fun too! Granted, I’m not a huge fan of going out and getting hammered every night but I love going to the theater, museums, movies, shopping, etc- and if there’s a good party thrown into the mix I’m down! I’m in the same boat as you though- I think everyone is, really- in the sense that we’re afraid we won’t like where we end up. I think the consensus about Barnard is that you are going to meet a lot of young women who are fiercely committed to their education. Whether that means they party a lot or not, I guess that depends on the girl. (for the record- I know two girls at Barnard. One parties A LOT (like ALOT) and the other, not at all.)

Danarrob- haha I completely understand, I’m the same way! And coming from two years of being in a party school makes me skeptical about the fun scene as well but hey I’m sure we’ll find our niche and start our own fun if nothing comes up! Haha. So excited to go to school with you guys! There’s a facebook group for fall 10 transfers that I put up, and the link is in Post #422 please join!
and amen to everything bwaybabe said!

To the waitlisted ones: don’t lost hope, as per usual!
demonstrate your continued interest and I hope they see it
and Bpm1000 Cornell is amazing; congratulations!! Hopefully you still get off the waitlist :)

Hmmm idk if high school plays a huge part. Do you ladies think it really does? As a junior transfer idk if they take much of mine into account because it isn’t that stellar but maybe for sophomore transfers it holds more weight?

Just a question - I live in the city and I have the opportunity to get up to Barnard by Wednesday at the latest… What are the pros and cons of bringing my letter of interest and other application supplements straight to the college? I feel like if they see my face and my dedication to bring it by hand might help my case, but what do you all think?

pauladanielle, its funny you mention that because that is exactly what I did and I personally think it was very helpful. The girl at the desk said she would definitely make sure the admissions officers received it and then I got an email from them confirming they got it, and thanking me for my continued interest in Barnard. So I would say go for it just because it really does show your dedication

As for the HS record, I definitely think it counts more than people give credit for. That being said, i feel like a college such as Barnard would be looking for different things in a HS record than other ‘elite’ colleges, such as- dedication and excellence in a specific discipline, a demanding courseload, and most of all, improvement since HS. I had some questionable HS grades in math and science and my math sat score was crap, but I worked my butt off to improve those skills in college and addressed the fact that math has always been a weakness for me in my application, and steps I’ve taken to overcome that. Math has actually been a real insecurity of mine, and I think the fact that I addressed it instead of grazing over it as if it didn’t exist really helped me in the transfer process generally.

In the end, though, colleges recognize that they’re not accepting a senior in HS when they look at transfers. For some of us, we’ll be half way through getting our degree! So, HS records do matter, but in a different way than when we originally applied.

that’s my 2 cents.
ps pauladanielle- go uptown! show them your stuff!

Transfer91, did you bring them anything supplemental, or just a letter? I’m thinking of including some poetry and maybe even a part of a story so that they can have a better view of my writing - or maybe a DVD of me performing or something. I’m not sure but I’m just curious what I should bring them… ?

Ordinarily I would agree that taking your letter etc in person to the admissions office would be a good idea. However, keep in mind that this is graduation week, so that office might not be open. Also, campus is likely to be just a little nuts…

Wow, has everyone else who’s on the waitlist received a confirmation to her letter (to stay on the waitlist)? Because I didn’t. Is that a bad sign?

pauladanielle,

i just brought them a letter, saying how much i appreciate them keeping me on the waitlist and how much I still wanted to go to Barnard and why. I would recommend not giving them SO much material since I imagine they have plenty to reevaluate as it is. A genuine letter should be enough, and they might not even get to watch a video or look at extra material.

I’d say go, give them the letter, and tell them in the letter what supplemental material you could give them

@transferstudentx I haven’t heard back either, I’m planning on calling them tomorrow.

ahhh how depressing, I really don’t think my current school is the right one for me and after visiting Barnard, I fell in love with it.

but i got the rejection letter today.
i’ve never posted in this thread, but just wanted to say
congrats to all the people that have gotten in and to those who are on the waitlist don’t lose hope!

Paula, I would definitely bring something in other than a sincere letter expressing your continued interest, but just remember not to overdo it. I think Barnard could be an exception among colleges in terms of what they would consider appropriate for things you would do to get off the waitlist… I read an article on waitlists and financial aid in the NY Times before and while some schools like UPenn or something kind of thought stuff other than a letter of intent as tacky, but someone who wrote the Ballad of Barnard actually appealed to the adcom. Also, to what churchmusicmom said, as long as you didn’t bother them in person today then you’re fine. I called to ask to speak to someone who could help me with my international student papers and the lady who answered the phone said that everyone in the offices is attending graduation today but that she would gladly take a message for me. Which of course I didn’t haha didn’t wanna bother such a special day. And after that she said that by tomorrow onwards everyone will be back to the grind at the offices so I think if you want to come by Wednesday you’ll be fine. :)

Lol thanks iPhone, so many grammatical errors!!! Hahaha.

You ladies know what I mean anyway haha. Also Paula that article was like 2-3 years ago so their preferences shouldn’t have changed too much I guess :)

Haha I am pretty sure I understood! I’ve pretty much decided that I’m just going to bring in a letter of interest, my midterm grades (which I pigheadedly neglected to turn in previously), and a poem I wrote that placed in the Walt Whitman Poetry Contest a couple of years ago. Not even sure about whether or not I’ll include the poem but it’s short and it could be a nice touch. :)

Oh if it won a contest def bring it in plus you even said it’s short so yeah!! Also, are you talking about the Barnard MidSem Grade Report forms?? Omg haha those are required! I’m so so sure it would boost up your chances if you turn those in just because they were legit required as part of your transfer app… In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if they were just waiting for that haha! Write that information in your letter of intent if you can! :)

Saw the thin envelope in the mailbox and assumed it was a rejection. Ready to shrug it off, I opened the envelope, and it turns out I was waitlisted! Kind of a miracle, considering how my application was postmarked something like April 10. I’m not sure yet if I’m going to keep my spot, since I already got into NYU Gallatin and they’re asking for a hefty deposit by next week. I haven’t visited Barnard, and I’m waiting to hear back from one more school. At the same time, Barnard has a lot to offer.

I’m really ready for this whole process to be over, quite frankly.
