Transfer Fall 2010

at this point i am dubious that the stats matter. people who were waitlisted are all academically strong and fit into the criteria of barnard. being waitlisted means that you are what the school wants, but with a limited amount of spots, the most diverse stood out. since there were so few spots available, what students had to offer to the school was key.

what matters now is how you will fit in with the group of accepted students (this is totally based off of my own opinion, which may be false), in terms of your diversity, community contributions, etc. that’s why they allowed for additional materials to be sent-in by waitlisted students. what i think barnard’s doing is they are trying to pick a group of women where each individual woman is different. you can have perfect stats, but if you have nothing to contribute to the school besides academics (which everyone has to offer already) then it seems like your chances might be a bit more difficult.

i am currently waitlisted and i feel that my stats will not work with me at this point. Here is a brief description:

I’m from NYC, my high school grades were pretty high (92+), SAT’s were pretty high (errr, i dont remember the exact number, but it was in the upper 1900’s), college gpa is 3.9, extra curriculars: mentor for elementary school students, v.p. of MAPS (minority association for pre-medical students), pre-health society, pre-health program, pre-med student (it really is a 9-5 job!), biology club, international club, habitat for humanity (build in georgia), concert band, private lessons, jazz band, honors program, civic engagement program, internship at workers union (research w/smoking, prenatal/postnatal women, diabetes, cancer) and Columbia Medical/Mount Sinai Hospital (excellence in histology award! WOO), organic chemistry tutor, exercise instructor for children at maimonides hospital, editor for school biology newsletter, nominated for Fulbright (by school), writing intensive tutor, chemistry lab assistant, 2008 olympic trials participant and 2007 national champion in judo, traveled nationally/internationally to judo tournaments/clinics/camps, judo instructor for children, and im bilingual (and so it the majority of the u.s. haha) there is something else but i simply cannot remember it at the moment.

I also created my own major because my school didn’t offer it.

Oh, and i plan on being an english/gender studies major but im going back and forth between that and microbiology/chemistry. i also really like art history… i sound like a typical college student!

i also moved out at 18 because of domestic violence issues. i talked about that, but i regret it because i don’t want to be chosen out of pure sympathy.

nonetheless, good luck to everyone! hopefully we will all find out very soon…

@djb4408 - think you are right about the limited number of spots. We are what Barnard wants but maybe there were other applicants who had similar extracurriculars and academics, PLUS one extra thing that made them stand out. I also have tons of other activities which I didn’t list on this thread. Those of us who were waitlisted are well-rounded high achievers. I also was orphaned at a young age due to a drug-addicted and abusive mother. I put that in my personal statement but do not regret adding it because it shaped me into the woman I am today.

So if I’m not accepted from the waiting list, I won’t feel so terrible. I know I have potential and that is what is important. All of you still waiting should feel great about yourselves! It is not the end of the world!

to djb3308, I meant I am applying in the fall for a midyear transfer. I was hoping to get this rounds successful student stats so I could get an idea of what the current class looks like. Thank you for posting your stats though! Anyone else who was waitlisted or accepted if you wouldn’t mind posting stats I’d really appreciate it!

@nyc2013 Just make sure you stand out. Try to do something extraordinary this summer since you’re applying in the Fall

I’m fairly certain that the reason I was accepted off the waitlist was because I can afford full tuition, but the rest of my stats aren’t terribly horrible either, if anyone is looking for an idea of who’s being taken off the waitlist:

White female applying for sophomore year
Currently at GWU, GPA: 3.35 (mostly As with Cs in math and science), 3.92 in major
College ECs: a little bit of theatre, voice and dance lessons, volunteer work with the Humane Society

HS GPA: 3.34 at competitive prep school
HS ECs: Head of Theatre club with lots of leads in productions, voice lessons, a cappella groups, editorial staff of school paper, tour guide, JV Softball captain, some community service (nothing extensive)

SATI: 2060 (CR680, M640, W740); SATII: US History:660, French:640, Lit:680, Math I:720; Composite ACT: 31

Rec was great, essays were fine, midterm grades were okay, but my application went in two weeks late (which is why I was stunned to be considered at all).

sigh still no word from Barnard…anyone else hear anything?

Nope. No word yet.

I just sent in my deposit for Swarthmore. Does anybody have any advice on Swarthmore? I am ravenous for information. I’m having trouble deciding between it and Cornell.

@transfer91 no word either but I’ve moved on to my second choice already. I think all that talk about the waiting list still being active was a bunch of bull

@1000bpm I don’t know much about Swarthmore other than its a small liberal arts college and good for english majors. My current college has a transfer initiative program with cornell and a close friend of mine goes there. If you’re going for CALS I heard it isn’t really that great of a school.

didn’t they say that the waitlist is scheduled to close at the beginning of july?

Its over. The waiting list has closed
