Transfer for Fall 2010

Who else got there acceptance letter? Has anyone received their finanicial aid package yet?

Welcome to AU  I was a transfer this Spring – so if you have any questions, let me know. They don’t even start reviewing transfer financial aid packages until they are done doing it for all new students. So they’ll start processing them May 1 and depending on when you applied, you can hear back any time from mid-May to mid June.

I received my acceptance back in the beginning of March but still haven’t received the letter with information on aid of any sort. I called to ask why this was and admissions said we should receive it within the next couple weeks. You can call and get your deposit deadline extended if you want like I did.

Yeah I got my acceptance back in March too, justing waiting for financial aid. I’ve heard they’re surprisingly generous, even to transfers, so I’ll most likely be at AU as I’ll probably get minimal FA from others schools.

I remember hearing that housing is really, really limited for juniors and seniors and even more so for transfers. AUTransfer, did you run into this problem?

Its complicated. AU guarantees housing for four semesters IF you can get on campus to begin with. So I transferred in during the middle of my Junior year and so I’m guaranteed housing until I graduate because I sent in my housing deposit early enough. So it’s actually a pretty sweet deal.

However, if you DO NOT get on campus when you transfer then this doesn’t apply to you. Just send in your housing deposit early and this shouldn’t be an issue.

Really? Maybe I should’ve tried to transfer spring semester then ha. I’ve just heard that it’s fairly improbable to get it for the fall as they have to accommodate freshman first.

If you mind, one more question. If I’m commuting, will I feel totally out of the loop? I didn’t necessarily want to live on campus, since I’m going to be a junior, but I kinda wanted to as I figured I’d be easier to meet people. Did you experience this? or will it not make a difference since there are so many clubs/organizations to choose from on campus?

It all depends on your personality. If you’re really involved on campus, and join a club or two, join choir or orchestra, or rush a fraternity/sorority – it’s really easy to meet people. Considering almost half the student population lives off campus…you won’t be that weird kid that lives off campus. Or maybe try to get a room in an apartment complex that houses AU students like the Berkshires or the Avalon so that you’re with students but not on campus.

Okay cool. Thanks for the info.

Is it advisable for a deferred applicant to send an additional recommendation and a 500 word essay to the admissions committee, together with an updated transcript ?

Anyone receive their financial aid/scholarship info yet?

I actually received a phone call saying I received a scholarship. I really want to know what else I’m getting cause I need to make a decision pretty soon ha. Probably going with American, though.

I also got a letter yesterday sayin that the admissions office selected me for the Dean’s Scholarship of $10,000 renewable for the next 3 semesters for a total of 2 year. However, I also want to know what else I will be getting. Does anyone know when we will hear about financial aid?

“They don’t even start reviewing transfer financial aid packages until they are done doing it for all new students. So they’ll start processing them May 1 and depending on when you applied, you can hear back any time from mid-May to mid June.”

I finally got my credit transfer evaluation but still no word on merit aid.

@AUTransfer - where did you read that from? I read on their website they usually send out merit aid information 6 weeks after March 1st: [AU Transfer Merit Scholarships | Financial Aid | American University, Washington, DC](Transfer Scholarships | American University, Washington, DC)

Merit Aid is different from Financial Aid – generally. If you are getting merit aid (which is fairly difficult for transfers – I believe you have to have a 3.5 to even begin being considered) you should have heard by now or by the end of the week.

FinAid (scholarships, grants, loans etc) you won’t hear until back until Mid-May to Mid-June. I know from being a transfer myself, talking to other transfers, and if you call the financial aid office – that is what they’ll tell you.

So AU’s website said that although the deadline for financial aid applicants was March 1st, the actual deadline for application was July 1st. I just sent in my application this week - and I see that people received notification months ago!

Does anyone know if they are still accepting applicants? I would assume if they still have freshmen on the waitlist, then they are still looking at transfers too…

Not sure… Technically they still accept transfer applications, but you will be pretty low on their priority list, in terms of applicants, as they still have freshmen on wait-list and deferred transfers. Why are you applying so late ? I think that adcoms would conclude that AU is not your priority, perhaps a backup, in the sense that if you wanted to really attend AU, you would have applied for the priority deadline in March. BTW there is very little aid this late in the application time frame, and from what I heard, the longer you wait the tougher it is to gain admission.

Darn those adcoms for being so intuitive! Yes, AU is my backup, but I am applying so late in the game because my husband only recently received job offers in the DC area. Until then, I hadn’t thought moving to DC would be practical. Maybe I should write a letter explaining the relatively late submission of my application…

You’re welcome to submit an application at this point; our final deadline is July 1. While it is true that things can “tighten up” post-May 1 in terms of admissions, we would not let a qualified candidate go at this point. So feel free to send your materials in!

Well thats great news  My application is complete except for recommendations. A quick question - I have a break in study, and one of the required documents listed is a statement on what I did with my time. This was also a question in the application, though. Do they need an additional solo document explaining this as well?
