Transfer from American, Need Advice

Hey guys,

I'm a freshman at American University (DC) and wanted to transfer to different school for the next academic year (Fall of 2010). The following is a list of what school I'm applying to:
NYU
BU
BC (Accepted to as an incoming freshman)
Columbia
UMich

I had a 4.2/4.5 HS GPA, and that is weighted. I am hoping to have between a 3.7-4.0 in college with the following classes:
Basic Statistics: Bus/Econ
Macroeconomics
College Writing
Business
Comparative Politics

On the ACT I got a 29, and have passed various AP exams if that matters at all.

I was also wondering what the colleges do and do not need (ie, do I send my official HS transcripts to them, do I re-send my ACT scores?)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I would, but I wanted a little specific advice on how to bolster my application. Would be easier to get into the school if I didn’t apply straight into the business school, but applied to general studies and transferred into the business school once I get there?

For schools where you didn’t apply as a freshman, they will have instructions for what transfer applicants need to send on their websites. All of them will require your HS transcripts.

For schools where you applied as a fr, they may say on their website, but you might also have to call up individual schools to see what needs to be resent. For reapplication, colleges vary greatly, there’s not general rule about what to send.

Thanks for the advice.

I was also wondering if taking a pass/fail class would look bad.

I got a 4 on the AP exam which gives me credit for Writing and Writing Seminar at American University, but I would also like to become a better writer and get help from this teacher for my transfer essays, so for the time being I have elected to stay in the Writing Class.

I did however, get out of Comparative Government and instead am taking a Basic Career Exploration and Dev class which is a 200 level course at the Business School, however, it is a pass fail course so if that won’t look good on my transfer application I can get into a different course.

If all goes as planned I’ll have between a 3.8-4.0 which with a strong application and essay should get me into most of the schools on my list.

I am also trying to look for an internship in the DC area.

Any advice and help would be great!

As in fr admissions, the rigor of your coursework matters. I don’t have the course descriptions in front of me (neither will adcoms), but my first impression is that an A in Comp. Govt. looks better than a P in Basic Career Expl. & Dev., which truthfully sounds like a pretty fluffy survey class. JMO.

I just added a Religions class, which is called Sacred Traditions. It would be either this or a history of European Civilization, but I already took AP Euro history in high school

hey AAli can i ask you how many credits you are taking this semester?

I’m taking sixteen (16) credits.

Is it the more letter of recs the better or should I just do the number they ask?

Should I let my advisor at American know that I want to transfer or would that make things sour?

Follow directions- there’s a reason why adcoms ask for two LORs. (Think about how much additional time it would take to read 3 instructor LORs from every applicant).

I wouldn’t tell your advisor until you had to (and s/he has the opportunity to get to know you). A slightly different and less “loaded” question to ask is, “how would x affect my chances for graduate school?”

As a heads up, transfer admissions almost always have lower acceptance rates than freshmen admissions.

Why do you want to leave AU?
