Transfer from Berkeley

Don't know how this happened but for below...

He wants smaller classes, and I doubt he'll want to pay OOS tuition for a public worse than Berkeley -- prestige ridden or not.

"Also, my ACT score was a 27.

SAT reasoning: 1640

SAT subject tests:
US History: 720
Math 2: 640

I was waitlisted by Stanford and Brown for freshman admission"

What's your hook?

I transferred successfully from Berkeley to Yale.... I also applied to some of those schools you listed. I was a bit of a slacker in high school, did well on my SATs and made pretty good grades, but that was about it. I redeemed myself substantially in college. I applied as a junior transfer, so I assume my high school record wasn't nearly as important. With scores like those, I think your only real chance is as a junior transfer. That doesn't mean don't try as a sophomore, necessarily, but rather I'd work on a game plan that assumes transferring as a junior.

Also, wait to judge Berkeley. It's a good school with great opportunities. I loved my freshman year there, and I think it would be a shame for you to have a crappy time because you're so focused on leaving.

"Is there a way to get accepted with good ECs, research, a 4.0, along with the current test scores?"

A 4.0 is definitely doable, contrary to what a lot of people from Berkeley like to tell you (even in the hard sciences/engineering), just be sure to set reasonable goals. It's going to be a lot more work than high school.

Good luck!

Hi,

How the hell did you get into Berkeley.

Sincerely,
The SAT Fairy

^^ MagiTF, if you don't mind me asking, why did you want to transfer to Yale if you loved Berkeley?

I didn't love Berkeley. I loved my freshmen year.

Touche.

10char

ummm, what is your hook? no, really...

I came from an underperforming high school. However, I did not state this in my essays, but my college counselor did imply it through her letter.

In California, my high school's API rating last year was a 1, which is the lowest ranking a school can get in terms of test scores.

that's not a hook, man

fyi, it's MUCH harder to transfer into top colleges than it is to be accepted as a freshman.Take a look at the acceptance rates for transfer students- it is often half or even less of accepted freshman.
"It's going to be a lot more work than high school."
Magi has it right.
And all the colleges you have picked require your HS transcript as well as ACT/ SAT scores, so they are a factor.

your stats seem to be on par but i don't know if your reason for transferring is solid enough...so why not try and like Berkeley? it's a top 20-25 ranked school so it matters, but if you are sure that you want to matter more then i suggest you make a solid reason for transferring.

What are the transfer acceptance rates for these universities:
UPenn, Brown, Chicago, Dartmouth, Cornell, Northwestern, or Johns Hopkins?

All this information is available on the internet (well, most of it is anyway; some Universities don't publish exact numbers.)

Just of the top of my head:

Penn - "175 transfers out of 2,000 applicants." I don't know what the yield is so its difficult to calculate.
Brown - 3.04%
Chicago - approximately 11% (88/800)
Dartmouth - 8.25%
Cornell - It varies significantly across colleges, and some of those figures are difficult to know exactly, because of the number of freshman applicants who were offered Guaranteed Transfer status (At least in the CALS, ILR, HE schools). Generally, CAS is the most difficult school for transfers.
Northwestern: about 33%
Johns Hopkins - 8.73%

Also, take a look at: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/76444-links-common-data-sets-posted-colleges.html

How in the hell did you get into Berk in the first place???
I’ve never even heard of anyone with scores like that here lol…
