Does anyone have information on which schools might accept a BFA transfer student as a sophomore? My D is currently attending the BFA program at NIU (Northern Illinois University) but it is definitely not a fit. She would like to try reapplying to some of her top schools and a apply to a few others we didn't know about last year.
Unfortunately we were unaware of this forum before she went through the application process, and she did not get very good advice on acting (or musical theatre) programs from her GCs at the charter school she attended.
She has a good academic record, an IB diploma with honors. But her SATs are only slightly above average.
It would be ideal if she did not have to start over again as a freshman since that will be a stretch for us financially. However, I'm not sure if there are many BFA programs that accept sophomores.

Most BFA programs will require new students to start in their beginning level acting classes even if they are a transfer from another school. However, depending on the sequencing of courses, and the amount of general education required a transfer student may still be able to finish in 3 years.

For example – when I was at Syracuse we had transfer students in our “freshman” core acting classes, but they still graduated a year ahead of us.

Is she looking for Acting or MT programs (you mention Musical Theatre in your OP)?

Regardless of whether or not she is required to start in the freshman year of the acting class sequence, she will still apply to the university as a transfer student. Thuis,m her HS record will not be as important as her college record.

Most programs require you to start over as a freshman, but I know UArts sometimes takes applicants as sophomores based on how well your audition goes. If you tried to transfer to BU, your first year would be as if you were a freshman, but based on the track you take, you could finish in 3 years.

Hope that helps and good luck!

It’s good to know that Boston University gave you that information, Son of Tranquil.

Yet another advantage of their Theatre Studies program, which provides plenty of excellent acting instruction within a very flexible framework.

Yes, she would just have to start over as a first year at most top programs. My son’s a second year at SUNY Purchase he has about 3 transfers in his company.

Similar to complexlife’s son, in my program at NCSA, including myself, there are four of us who are transfers, 3 of whom have already completed two years of college and are back as freshman again.

My child is currently in a BFA program as a freshman and is considering transferring. I know that with most bfa’s you need to start as a freshman. is that always true with bfa’s, and do they have to go through the same process as freshman candidates?

As noted above- for many (most) programs you will need to start their acting classes as a freshman, but that doesn’t necessarily mean 4 more years of school. It depends, and you would need to check with schools where your child is interested in applying. And yes, schools will (always? Can’t say for sure) make you go through the same process as freshman applicants for auditions etch. One thing I don’t know is deadlines for transfers- b/c isn’t dec 1st the application deadline for a lot of schools? Are transfer deadlines later?

Thank you too wonderful. It seems that it depends on the school and all deadlines are different. Can anyone out there share their BFA transfer stories?

CCPA/Roosevelt accepts a few sophomore transfers every year (as sophomores). I believe there were three in acting this year, not sure about MT.

Coastal Carolina University does accept sophomore transfers. I know several kids who have successfully transferred in and done very well at CCU.
