Hello I am currently a freshman here at Carleton College and it was a pretty tough trimester for me here at Carleton. I fit in here awkwardly and have zero motivation to study anything. I came from a big city and Northfield doesn’t have anything to offer me. The weather here is disastrous and I can’t imagine myself surviving the winter here. I don’t have friends that I can share my dislike for the college. Almost everyone loves the college and I can’t relate to them at all. I know the academics are good but I can’t focus on my studies because of my dislike for other aspects of the college. Below are my stats, is it possible for me to transfer to a college with higher or equal standing in academics as Carleton?
SAT Score: 1490
High School GPA: 3.9
College first trimester GPA: 3.2 (I hate the writing course so much, I didn’t write 2 of the 3 essays and I barely passed it)
Hopefully you have had a great break at this point and have been able to sort out what your best next steps are. For the upcoming term you should go to the Counseling Center, find a couple of clubs and activities that are interesting for this term and do your best in class. About whether to transfer - find the schools that are strong in your expected major that meet the other things that are important to you. Also, you might be surprised if you give the new term a new chance that you’ll rediscover what appealed to you when you accepted.
@itsapparent after talking with several people, i have decided to quit college for good.
That seems ridiculous and immature. Finish out the year strong and then take a gap year to consider your options.
Taking a leave of absence now from Carleton makes good sense. You can do other things during the time off, plan a transfer, and even consider returing to Carleton a year from now.
My guess is that you are burned out. So take some time off, and go back to college when you are truky ready to be there.
@minyoongi I’m sorry to hear that, but I hope you are making your decision from the best of your own inner guidance., I’m not sure from your response if you mean you are not going back to Carleton or to any college. Not every high school senior can predict the college environment that he or she feels will be successful in six to nine months from acceptance day. It’s hard to go in to detail on a board like this all the factors which brought your decision - I hope that some of the people you spoke with are parents and school administrators. As you look ahead for your next steps, there are many wonderful colleges which will offer the resources you need - in class and out. As long as you make your new adult decisions from your best mindset, there is no wrong!
