Transfer from CC to UCLA or HAAS? GPA?

Hi ALL~

I originally was going to transfer to UCBerkeley: HAAS as a BusAdmin major, but I had a change of mind and decided that I should go to UCLA instead with a different major.

I want to get into UCLA. I will be applying for ECON as my undergraduate major. My main concern at the moment is my GPA. I have heard that UCLA usually accepts transfer applicants with a GPA of 3.8 and above. My current UC GPA is 3.64, which is why I am concerned. What should I do right now in order to increase my chances of getting accepted to UCLA as an ECON major? According to my counselor I should have no problems transferring to UCB with my current GPA, but I have not discussed about my concerns and interest to transfer to UCLA.

Oh and I still have 4 major prep courses to take so my GPA is still subject to change.

No offense but another fail counselor…

Are you applying this year? If yes, try to write a good PS and demonstrate interest in your major by joining econ club or participate in other EC. UCLA is really strict about pre-req, so leaving 4 to take in the spring is like committing suicide… If you are applying next year for fall 2013, then you should be fine.

PS: Cal and LA’s Econ are both highly selective, which means if one requires a 3.8 or above like you said, chances are the other require the same. Which is why I said don’t listen to your counselor advice -,-

Yes I will be applying to transfer next year for Fall 2012. And yes I agree that most of the counselors that I’ve met so far at my CC are really not that helpful, which is why I am here… I will be taking the rest of my major preps for Spring of 2012 and I will be ready for transfer. sigh I hope that I will be able to increase my GPA by the end of Spring Semester…

UCs don’t care your last spring semester’s grade, cuz they are not gonna see it when they make the desicsion. All your app will be determined by your works till this fall. And sorry to say that, 3.6 is really low for Econ major in Cal and LA, which I think the avg admitted gpa is, if not higher, 3.9; 4.0 even cannot assure the admission.

Oh that sucks… What are my chances for transferring to Cal for BusAdmin? And what about that Transfer Alliance Programme for UCLA… sigh nevermind I don’t think my CC even supports that program T.T

Honestly speaking, you have very slim chances at Haas or UCLA BizEcon/Econ because of your GPA.

Haas had an average average admit GPA of 3.81 and is only going to increase this year due to the elimination of the breadth requirement.

UCLA’s (2010 numbers) BizAdmin and Econ both had average admittance GPAs of 3.94 and 3.95 respectively. Additionally, waiting to complete 4 prerequisites in your final spring semester will place you at a bigger disadvantage.

If it’s possible, I would advise to spend another year at CC and bring your GPA up. A ~3.85 with completed prerequisites is more competitive than what you have now. If staying another year isn’t feasible, I would recommend applying to another major with similar prerequisites.

Don’t take my post the wrong way, but I rather you look at the numbers and face some truth as opposed to getting your hopes up because of what a misinformed/misguided counselor said.

Thanks for the information. I have been in a CC for a while now, so I really want to get out. I guess things aren’t looking good so far for me :(

MitchAPalooza pretty much said everything I wanted to say to you OP, so good luck!
If you think Cal/LA is out of reach, consider a midtier UC like SD, Irvine, or Davis. Or maybe USC’s Marshall if you have complete their specific Gen Eds…

UCLA Math Economics was less selective, but the average transfer admit GPA was still 3.71 for fall 2010. Pure math, applied math, and statistics average transfer admit GPA were 3.61, 3.60, and 3.69. If you are considering graduate school in economics or quantitative finance or actuarial jobs, these would be good majors to consider.

Davis, Irvine, and San Diego are some of my choices as well. UCLA and UCB are my top choices though. I really want to go to UCLA, because I was interested in their Asian Languages Minor and their Korean Language courses (P.S. UCLA is the only UC that offers Korean Language courses).

There is a lot of other factors that makes me like UCLA as well… sigh well thanks again everyone. Considering the fact that I am new here in this forum, I am really liking these fast replies and comments  Glad I came here~

^ irvine Business admin is impacted. I did some research online, they’re only accept around 100 students each year, and there are thousand of thousand applicants. With ur currently GPA or raise ur GPA + completed all their preqre, u will have a chance.

Go to USC, it is the best choice. USC Marshall business beats UCLA business econ.

Just blame the major, why it has to be business…

Apply for environmental econ for ucb and another major at ucla (just get in) then do the accounting minor over the summers at ucla. That is what I would do personally.

For Uci, definitely don’t apply for bizadmin. Stick with bizecon/econ + business minor.

^ why not? atleast apply for a chance. Business econ can be alternate major.

Off topic, judging from your username, I know why you want to go to UCLA lol
U C Lots of Asian :D

Response to ferrari:

You got many TAGers, many non-tagers, then ppl who put it as their alternative. I pretty sure the priority goes in that direction.

Also a 3.64 with lots of prereqs planned is pretty bad. I wouldn’t bother with applying for bizadmin. Ppl who get in bizadmin will probably be ppl who into ucb or ucla also.

Unless you are okay with the possibility of not getting into irvine, I wouldn’t do it. I would take the guarantee and tag irvine and use that as my back up if I didn’t get into ucla/ucb

Berkeley has Korean language courses:
[General Catalog - Korean Courses](http://sis.berkeley.edu/catalog/gcc_list_crse_req?p_dept_name=Korean&p_dept_cd=KOREAN&p_path=l)

So does Irvine:
[School of Humanities - Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures](<a href=“UCI General Catalogue Archives”>UCI General Catalogue Archives)

So does Riverside:
[Comparative Literature & Foreign Languages: Courses](http://complitforlang.ucr.edu/undergrad/courses.html)

And Santa Barbara:
[url=http://www.eastasian.ucsb.edu/courses_Korean.html]EALCS[/url]

Oh I meant to say that UCLA was one of the only UC’s with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Korean. But yea wow I didn’t realize those Universities offered Korean Language courses. I should do a much more thorough research in these colleges :</p>

@sparkboy Lol I know right… XP
