Hello, I’m currently a senior in highschool that will be going to community college next year. The past 3 years I’ve had a 3.65 unweighted and 3.8 Weighted GPA. I have taken AP and honors classes but I haven’t really tried my hardest either but know I’ll have to next year at CC and have been studying and doing A lot more work this year in my senior year to create good study habits to prepare me for CC.I will be doing the honours program at my CC Mt.Sac and know if I’ll have to study a lot and work hard once at CC to obtain and keep a 3.7-3.9 GPA. My main worry is with the math courses as math hasn’t always been my thing. I currently have an A in my math class which is the one right below pre calc. So i know at CC I’ll have to take Pre calc and Calc My ultimate goal is to be able to transfer to UCLA in Business which i know the average gpa is 3.9 for transfers. I also have schools like USC NYU and University Of Washington in mind. Any advice would be appreciated as I really want to get into UCLA and am ready to put the work in.
@jcbjj UCLA’s Business Economics major is heavily based on math, and it’s really more of an Economics major with an emphasis on Accounting, as opposed to the more traditional Business Administration programs offered at other universities like USC, Cal, UCI, etc. If math really isn’t your thing, you might want to reconsider majoring in BusEcon for UCLA, because at MtSac you will need to take two semesters of college Calculus, two semesters of college Accounting, two semesters of Economics, and if you get accepted to UCLA you will have to take “Microeconomic Theory” and Calculus-based “statistics for Economists,” both of which are heavily based on calculus-level math and are known to be especially rigorous at UCLA. And these classes are merely the lower-division prerequisites for the major! Imagine how difficult and math-heavy the upper division classes will be! BusEcon is also one of the most competitive, impacted majors at UCLA (11% acceptance rate) and 4.0 transfer applicants regularly get rejected every year.
My recommendation to you: In your post you mentioned that you will be joining the Honors program at MtSac. This will allow you to get TAP certified for UCLA which will give you Priority consideration AND the ability to choose an alternative major which you will be considered for in case you get rejected for your main major. If you really want to major in Business Econ, you can apply with that as your main major, but select a non-impacted major for your alternative choice, that way you can increase your chances of getting in to UCLA and perhaps MINORING in business-related minors such as the Accounting minor or Entrepreneurship minor. Or you could choose to major in a non-impacted major such as History, Philosophy, or European/Chicano/Asian Studies (all of these majors have roughly 60% acceptance rates with much lower GPAs required) and minor in Entrepenurship or Accounting when you get to UCLA - and if you follow this strategy, you might not even need to join the Honors Program because the prereq will be so easy to get good grades in resulting in a very high GPA that will get you accepted without TAP.
Closing thoughts: If Math isn’t your strength, you will be very stressed in all of the math, calculus, economics, accounting, and statistics classes that are required of UCLA BusEcon majors, which might result in your GPA taking a hit. Besides, if you really want to have a career in Business you can always get an MBA degree after your BA - this is what most employers prefer to see on your resume rather than a Business degree. You can get into an MBA program with any undergraduate major - you could major in History for your BA, then get your MBA, and you can still have a career in Business/Marketing/Consulting! Study what your true passion is, and if math isn’t your passion, try something else! :-bd Good luck!
Thank you so much for the help!
