transfer from cc

I am new to this website so I apologize in advance for asking a question that I'm sure has been discussed ad nauseum on this site. That being said, I feel that my situation is somewhat unique and I am hoping I can get some solid advance.

I am going into my sophomore year in community college. I have a 4.0 gpa, and am a member of Phi Theta Kappa honors society. I have a good amount of ec's and I also have military service.

My hs record is not quite as pristine. I had a 1.5 gpa and low SAT's. I was a complete screw up. I was involved in drugs and found myself in countless run-ins with the law.

Can I possibly use my childhood errors to my advantage? I am a business major and I will have my AS before I transfer. I should graduate with a 4.0 if everything goes "as planned." I would like to know what my chances are at getting in to some top schools. Would I be completely delusional to apply to NYU Stern which is my number one school? should I try to transfer into their undergrad and then apply to the business school later on? Any replies will help. Thank you.

If you stay 2 years in CC and apply as a Junior transfer, they will solely focus on the GPA, ECs, etc from your 2 years in community college. This allows those who have low GPA, SAT scores in high school to become very competitive transfer students.

Also, in terms for going to NYU Stern. If you keep up your 4.0, do all the req/recommended courses, and do plenty of EC’s(in and out side of school), you should be a very competitive applicant. Definitely take advantage of joining clubs(becoming an officer), student council, and any other involvement in school that you can be apart of. Undergrad business schools look highly on your leadership in and out of school. Internships and work experience will also be a big advantage to your application.

Undergraduate business schools look for…

Competitive GPA, for stern 3.8+ (GPA is your educational foundation)

Test Scores

Extra Curricular Activities (In and out of school) More the better.

Leadership roles (Were you an officer for clubs? Student Body Officer? Student Council?)

Good Essays

Do well in these categories and you will be a very competitive applicant. Also considering other business schools such as (USC, UC Berkeley, etc.). You probably don’t want to take SAT’s again. You’re in luck since NYU doesnt require SAT’s from transfer students. Look for schools that do not require SATs such as the schools I listed above. Good luck!

FYI, NYU Stern is known for their stingy Financial Aid. Don’t expect to receive a lot of aid from NYU. You must have some finances yourself to afford NYU if not, you must go in debt to attend… =/
