Transfer from ccc to uc in 1 year ???

bump
10char

NYC, I was a 1 year ccc transfer student as well. In fact I start at UC this fall!

I came into my local CC with 18 AP units, and did 22 units each semester while maintaining a part time job. The overloads are definitely doable as long as you put in the time and effort.

As for admissions, I was afraid I would get rejected because of my lack of stats. I had no GPA and no completed course work other than AP during time of admissions . But that did not stop me from applying. I was able to finish off the school year strong with a 3.9 accumulative GPA with all prereqs and all gen ed (IGETC) done. Ultimately I got into my dream school, UCLA as an Economics major which is highly selective. I was surprised due to the fact that they only saw my fall grades and based my decision off of that, but hey these kinda things due happen.

I got into UCB, UCLA, UCSD, and UCI all Economics.

NYC, If you have the time and the motivation I say go for it!
Just remember if you screw up your gpa at ccc, not only is your UC admission on the line but admission to a good grad school as well.

Mollycat, I know schools vary on how many credits they give for APs . . . how many EXAMS did you take, if I may ask?
thanks!

Sure thing cpb.
Here are the AP tests that I passed, their respective scores, and number of units awarded.

Microeconomics - Score of 4 (3 units awarded)
Macroeconomics - Score of 5 (3 units awarded)
U.S. History - Score of 4 (6 units awarded)
U.S. Gov - score of 4 (3 units awarded)
European History - score of 5 (3 units awarded)

Hope it gives you guys some insight

thanks! I’m basically doing the same thing as you, and I have two more APs but only 15 creds this quarter . . . it really reassures me that someone else has done this! I actually made a thread about it half an hour ago because I was so worried that I hadn’t found anyone else who had done it this way!

Thanks mollycat1 :slight_smile: U gives me hope + inspiration !
I have fewer AP credit than you. However I started ccc since summer. Also, I take more units during the fall (25) because I don’t work.
Thank you for all the replies…really each cmmt motivates me more

@cpbbookworm: im reading ur thread :)

I get it. You want to make friends. Im just saying if you’re outgoing it dont matter when you transfer you will still make friends. I know when I transfer it wont be significantly different from CC…why? Because I wont live on campus, I’ll be working (probably full time), and I’ll probably spend most of my time away from campus. For many others it’s different, but I don’t see how UC will deviate from CC in my situation other than academic rigour and pain in the ass parking. The only way UC will be culturally different is if they grant me couples housing (I’m married) in that case life will be very different because I’ll spend a lot more time on campus. In my opinion

@vintji
Transfer to make friends is a very funny reason.
My main reason to transfer in 1 year is that it will financially benefits me (It will saves me A LOT…I cannot really go into details because it becomes personal)
Secondly, I had some bad experience in my current city (nothing tragic dont worry) and really want to move out. Why on earth did I move to my current city in the first place ? I am still minor and live with my parents who move from country to country every 3 years. And they end up to my current city…They will go back to my native country in 1 year (–> timing would be perfect if i also finish ccc in 1 year)

But I have to say that vintij you are kind of (not totally !) right…I dont have many friends in my current city. I have enough to have a social life though :slight_smile: And that’s also one of the reason I hate my current city. I traveled since I was literally born…have lived in countless foreign countries and never ever had any adjustment problem until I moved to my current city. But I can say that the social problem (friendless or sth like that ) has been solved. And I’m still minor and you are already married (congrats)…so the social scene is certainly different

Sorry for rambling on and on…

Thanks vintji anyways for sharing your story

@nyc

Take this with a grain of salt…BUT hahah are your parents like CIA ppl or something; having to move every three years??? lol

In response to some earlier comments, transferring really changed my life… when I went to community college, I had no friends and went home every day after school and sat in front of the computer all day. I got into constant fights with my parents and was pretty depressed for those two years… then I transferred to UCSB. I went from sitting in my room all day to the most social of all UCs and I really took advantage of it. My grades went up, I made tons of friends, and living in the incredible Isla Vista was about as a polar opposite as what my previous situation was like.

Unless you go to Santa Barbara City College and live in Isla Vista (the only community college that really provides an active social life in California), I think any transfer will be an improvement.

@nujabe29:
No they are diplomats…:)simply as that…it would be cool if my parents = CIA :slight_smile:

@rc251: wow. thanks for sharing. i think anyone (or most ppl) who has gone to community college knows that depressing isolated feeling…:(

Hey you’re right about being married as a different scene. Even though I am young (23) and just got married, the scene is different because you don’t feel the need to party every weekend, you don’t feel the need to hook up or get plastered whenever you can. I still have single friends, but I find certain activities more enjoyable (art, shows, debates, wine, golf) all of which were not on my radar when I was single because I was totally focused on getting the Pussay. However, every man needs at least one or two get aways to vegas with his boys. You know what I be sayinnnn? With community college, you lose the experience of 4 full years trying to rise above the mediocrity of CC expectations, then you get in and you enjoy it ten times more because it’s all so new almost like freshman year. While all the juniors who have been there for years are wanting out already, you are so happy to be in.

@vintij

So you also feel a SIGNIFICANT difference btw social life at a cc and an uc…When I read ur 1st cmmt on this thread…I thought u were like mocking me or sth :stuck_out_tongue: lol

“However, every man needs at least one or two get aways to vegas with his boys. You know what I be sayinnnn?”

Nope. Coz Im a girl. Lol I get your point

The only thing i’m afraid is that when I get to uc…I would be so happy–> party too much :slight_smile:

Thanks for ur cmmt.

I just found this thread, i’m trying to transfer in a year too! I had 21 semester credits with APs and piled on classes in Fall/Winter/Spring and I’ve been worried too that they won’t accept me without some GPA to look at. But I have a friend who did transfer in a year to Davis as a junior, and she’s way ahead of the other transfers. as long as you complete IGETC and your prereqs (I only had to take 3 for econ) you should be fine. I hope.

anyway, I’m pretty sure you can’t compare the UC experience to the CC one unless you live off campus at the UC, or you have tons of friends at you CC/in your town. most of my friends went away to college, so I have no one to really hang out w/ besides my boyfriend (we’re both trying to transfer to UCLA in a year)… people just arent very much into making new friends at CC either, cause they’re busy or have other friends or whatever reason.

nyc_dream, will you by any chance be applying to any schools in new york as well?! :D

For those that apply after one year of CC,
on the application, it gives you a message that says that you do not have the units to be considered a junior transfer because the AP units are not included but you can still continue as is.

Is there something else that needs to be done or do you just continue with i.e. 33 units?
I will have over 60 units with AP scores.

atk

im doin the 1 year thing too
it says i have 39 units which is right but got 21.3 from AP’s so that puts me over 60 just sumbit it the program doesnt add the AP’s each school has their own credits n such for them but you are ok so dont worry

hah i freaked out with that too guys… then i figured out that it’s because they don’t count the credits from in progress/planned courses. so as long as you have 60 by spring you’ll be fine

@nothingatall

Actually no im at a California Community College so im applying to UC’s and some privates in CA :slight_smile:
But NYC is still my favorite city…maybe after college…i will move there =] who knows :D

hmm…i never got that message, i only had 61 quarter units w/o my ap’s and i need 90 which i go way over with my ap’s…

I am also trying to transfer after 1 year (did 13 units during hs + 8 APs, i think ~24 units, then 13 fall 6 winter and 11~15 spring). As for the message of not having enough units i am planning to contacts the schools to make sure the app is processed correctly (this happened to me in hs part of the reason I am going to ccc one class didn’t go through so it looked like i didn’t’ have the art requirement). I’d suggest you guys do the same else you could be screwed over and have their system auto reject you.
