Transfer from Columbia

I'm thinking of throwing in some transfer applications this spring, because I'm not so happy at Columbia (sophomore). I've got a 3.58 GPA, have a strong high school record, and I've been involved in a few ECs here.

What would my chances be for:
Vassar
Brown

Also, if you have any other ideas for somewhat artsy/creative places with campus community, would love to hear.

I might consider Wesleyan if I were you :)

Swarthmore.

And I love how in like 2 days we’ve seen a “Transfer from Yale/Cornell/Columbia” board all appear, lol. Guess the Ivy League isn’t what everyone wants?

hey be nice, the transfer from yale was girlfriend related and had nothing to do with academics. not the case with columbia and cornell though :S

i’m pretty sure they’re all from the same person…
who knows…tomorrow u might see ‘Transfer from Harvard or Princeton’

Just because schools rank so highly doesn’t mean they’re a good fit for everyone.

Nope I’m not the same person… I’m just pretty bummed out by the lack of campus community at Columbia. It would be great to go somewhere where I feel like I’m part of an actual school, rather than just living in the city and attending classes. And I feel like I know lots of people here, but it’s so hard to feel like you have a deep connection with anyone because of the environment. It’s a shame because I know it’s so highly ranked… but it’s sophomore year already, and I feel like I’m not making the most of my college experience.

What do you think my chances would be like?

We have a saying at Columbia:

“It’s like unprotected sex: you’ll be happy you got in but sorry you came.”

If you are interested in a strong Theater program, you may wish to consider Northwestern.

haha super. i think ima quote that to my friends whos studying there as we speak :stuck_out_tongue:

mewria. tell me more about life at columbia please, its quite interesting, th way different people see different things of exactly the same lat/longitudinal points on the earth.

x

I think you would have a decent chance transferring into Brown and that Brown would be a perfect fit for you. I have a friend that goes to Brown right now, and he loves it. He describes it as the true college experience and I see pictures of what Brown is like, and man I get jealous as. He says “Brown is awesome man, everyday is like an adventure… there’s always something to do in Providence”. I think Brown would be a great fit for you, that’s just my two cents.

Has no one addressed the elephant in the room? He has a 3.58 and is just not competitive for Brown or other Ivies (regardless of the fact that he’s a Columbia student). Your GPA is far too weak to be competitive at any Ivies or top liberal arts schools, but by all means try anyway.

I wouldn’t say your GPA is far too weak. It really depends on the circumstances – have you taken mainly high level courses? Have you taken classes with hard graders? Are you in the sciences (at least at Yale, B’s and C’s are much more acceptable and expected in the sciences)? In other words, your GPA isn’t perfect, but if you’ve taken hard classes, that could more than make up for it. Even if you haven’t, I wouldn’t let that discourage you because GPA is just one of many factors.
